After several years of trying to write and record electronica songs in software, I may soon give up. Don't get me wrong, my main host for this style of music (eXT) is great. But I spend weeks just messing with all the sounds and tweaking every little thing and end up with a crappy song. So I picked up some older gear: a Roland EG-101, Yamaha QX21 sequencer, and a Yamah RX11 drum machine. Many folks would call this old, crappy gear. But I have had a blast writing some great music on this setup lately. Now I add my kp-2 to the mix and it's on.

I wouldnt call it crappy. I had a QX21 and an RX17 and had a blast. The QX21 is real simple but it does what you need, it sequences and quantizes. The RX11 will be fine if you add a lil reverb. I did all kinds of fun stuff with mine.

Compared to what I have now, it is Caveman material. :D Yet I totally relate. Sometimes it seems that the more you have, the more you rely on the gear and not the music. I made some pretty good stuff with A DX7, QX21, RX17 and a fostex 4-track. I miss those days. :( I know that it was a LOT more fun than dealing with 9 synths, unlimited tracks of midi and 100 tracks of digital audio like I have now. :o

Way I see it..if you can put it good use, and you're pretty happy with it, then there ain't a damn thing about it that's crappy.
