It finally happened.... After four and a half years at our present location, playing almost daily, at all hours of the day and night, often at pretty high volume.... Someone called the police! It was actualy a little funny, the cop thought it was someone with the stereo turned really loud, he was a bit surprised to learn it was live (guess we sound better than I thought.) Anyway we checked the volume level from outside, 1 foot from the door-28 decibles, 1 foot from the only window in my studio- 38 decibles. What a joke, I've registered the neighbors stereo at 60 decibles from inside my studio. Maybe our new neighbors just dont like good old rock n roll. By the way this happen at 9:00 o'clock on a Saturday night...sheez! Anyway we all had a good laugh (including the cop) then turned up the volume (so we were 35 decibles at the street) and played on till around midnight. This has nothing to do with anything, I just thought I'd share the story and see if anyone else has had fun with the cops or their new neighbors. BTW this was the first time I ever heard of a cop telling a band "You could be a lot louder and still be legal."

I hate that. My band gets together every Monday for a big jammin session. Our neighbours are pinicky little gits and whenever they heard it, they would call the police. This was at around 7pm.. The police said to turn it down to keep the 'friendship' between us and our neighbours. We didn't, but i tell you - if they had come round in person instead of calling the police, i'd have a hell of alot more respect to them than i do, and would have turned it down.

We had a party the other night, and after a long night of alcohol and smoke, about 4 of us ended up outside at about 5:30am doing a barbershop quartet singing all the classics. Bit silly, and we ended up having a **very** angry irishman running down our backgarden path at us screaming and yelling. Ever had to deal with an irate irishman who you've just woken up with out of tune harmonies? No? i'll give you a tip, dont ever let yourself get in that position :D

Obviously his only issue was the pitch problems!! ;)

Here in Germany where actually everything has a norm or rule this is not a clear thing.
Afaik there are no real values in db that you have to keep.
On the one hand you'll think this is great cause noone tells you your limit...but it ain't! In most cases the accuser gets his will!

In the first band I ever played we jammed really loud (and bad ;-) ), sometimes even with open windows. The neighbour was a pretty old lady and we thought day by day that she would be fed up and call the cops...
It never happened! That day when I got out my equipment of the room to move to another city, she even asked if ceased and said she really liked it.
Crazy world...;-)

a band i was in a few years ago used to practice in the bass player's garage on sunday afternoons. the neighbours had a habbit of calling the cops on us once or twice per practice. since we were technically on county property, the county police would come out. by the time they'd show up, we would in the middle of practicing our acoustic set. once the police left, we'd be ready to play at full volume.

loud

Was in a band back in the day (mid 70's) neighbors called the police on us...when they got there they told us to turn down a little.....then wanted to know if we would play for one of their dances........lol no probs after that :D

Had sherriff called on us by a dj of all people. Sherriff said play something and the band at my studio at the time started to play. We (me and the sherriff) walked to the property line and you could barely hear it. He went to the persons house and said he could not hear anything. So he told them not to waist his time anymore :) I loved it.

When we bought our house, I spent a month or two building some rooms in the basement.

I've lived there 12 years now, and the only reason my neighbors know I "do music" is because I've told them. Several didn't believe me. I always thought it was odd they weren't curious about all the gear that comes and goes on the weekends. :)

When i first started playing drums, my neighbor would call the cops on me regularly. Mind this is at noon on a weekday! At one point a friend and I went out on the porch and started screaming at the top of our lungs about building a bomb and putting in his house (you can tell this was a while ago, that kind of stuff would get you in trouble these days) and he stuck a tape recorder out the door and recorded us to give it to the cops. The cops never said anyhting. They were tired of dealing with him after all of the stupid calls about drums.

My old neighbor called the police on me one day about the "noise". I told them he was just mad because I turned him down sexually. He never called them again.

I hate my new neighbors too. Man, this new guy just moved in next door and was jammin' with his band at 9:00 last Saturday while my kids were trying to sleep. Damned hippie, long-hair communists. :) :) :)

Just kidding. I've gone through several similar situations with cops in the past when I was rehearsing with a band (nowadays, at least for the moment, I'm just playing live during tracking). One instance that jumps out was when we were rehearsing 'Unchained', and after the song, we heard pounding on the door. Opened the door to find two cops standing there and they started singing the chorus, complimented the sound, and asked politely if we would turn it down. A month or so later we had moved from the living room for rehearsal into a very shallow-ceilinged basement. Apparently the same neighbor called and this time revealed himself when the police arrived, demanding something be done. We did a sound test for the police as they requested and verified any small volume coming from the basement was not disturbing the peace. The guy complaining was irrate and threatened me in front of them. Tempted as I was to indulge in his advances, I knew the situation was on our side and refrained. That, and the fact the police were telling him he did not have a valid issue of excessive noise, made him even more angry and he took a swing at me in front of the cops. They cuffed him and put him in the back seat of one of the cars. They released him a few minutes later without arrest after we were asked to return inside of our house, but it was a good victory. It is not right to disturb the peace of others, but the second time around we were not really audible unless you were outside and really listening for us.

It was really in and around that point in my life that I came to like and respect police officers, and saw the "fair, human side" of some good cops. :) :) :)

I have a stupid upstairs neighbor.... she doesn't even have the guts to come knock on the door to talk to me... she constantly calls the security... they show up... don't hear anything, then leave. I tried to talk to her, but she gave me the most ignorant rant about it being too loud that i wanted to slap her. She would call during the middle of the day on the weekends.. times when it's really not disburbing at all. I always make sure to shut down at 10pm.. just because i would want people to do that for me....

So ... she has a small child and he loves to stomp around and dive on the floor... so i picked up the phone and called the security. So now when i practice i don't get any knocks on the door from the security. frankly.. i think they got tired of her calling and... when they show up it's not loud at all... stupid B##$(
