took me a few days, but I did what you guys said:
detuned the kick, added more dampening, and stuck the b1 up pretty close... this is what came of it... thanks for all your help... is there anything else that needs to be done aside from start recording *good* tracks instead of muddling around to get a good sound

is there TOO much snare rumble, if so... any EQ tips? dampening tips?

I just heard your sound clip, thats definitly a big help and gives me more to work with.

This looks like its going to get resolved during EQing. Me being there is one thing, quite the other if I cant physically be there to figure it out.

Your bass drum sounds real boomy, so if it's on the resonant end of your bass drum, put it on the batter side. Also, if you can get your bass drum on a seperate track, completely cut the 250hz range on a 10 band eq or something close to it. You'll notice a bigger difference with a 10band eq than you would a 20 or larger and thats what this situation calls for.

The snare sounds fine to me, except I'm hearing an inconsistent sound out of it. If you listen closely, sometimes you hear a ring and sometimes you don't. Simply hitting the snare with a solid hit everytime will help get a consistent sound.

Try this out for starters.

The 250hz range was already cut. I have two oktava mk012s as overheads and a sp b1 on kick. I did raise my 80hz a lot because it was way too weak.

Try this one on for size... I lowered the 80hz... so it shouldn't be as boomy. How is this sound?

You're all set. In fact, reminds me of John Bonams sound.

One suggestion: if you want, add some light to medium reverb to accent more of that raw drum sound you have. I think it'll give more character that way.

But thats just me. Good luck with your project.

Will do. Thanks again... to you LRosario and to everyone else who has helped.

I'd like to point out something I notice on both clips, and plays into the dilemmas we all face when goimg for 'tones'. In the intros the kick has more body and attack. As you get into the later portions of the tracks it changes (not drastically, but some)
You'll notice that as playing technique changes (force, whether the beater is left on the head after a strike), what might be the 'optimum sound tweak' also shifts.
To illurstrate the circle we might go in, I could see maybe thinking that clip two's tone is right in there at the intro, but maybe wanting to add the 80hz and some edge back in later...
:D

Thanks, I will take that into consideration when we actually being laying down drum tracks.
