and the results were damn near phenomenal. 5 high school kids gave me all the cash they had, and on 2 days' notice they recorded a 4-song, 21+ minute EP in 3 days, which i finished the mastering this afternoon.

drums were miced with an audix d6 on the kick, d2's on rack toms, d4 on the floor tom, i5 on the snare, rode nt5 on the hi-hat, and sm-81's on OH's...guitars were recorded with 2 4x12 cabs, with an i5 on one, a 57 on the other, and a rode NT-2A as a room mic...bass was DI'd, and all vocals were recorded with a 57. all tracks were run into a mackie onyx mixer, and mixed ITB with mackie tracktion.

to top things off, all of the tracking was done in an 8x8 outdoor shed, 100 ft. from HWY 101, but we didn't let that stop us. i'm so excited i can barely contain myself...i've made some good recordings in a top-end studio as an audio engineering student, but i never thought i would be able to crank out something that sounds so good on my 1st REAL try, especially given the space i have to work with. i had started to become somewhat discouraged because of the money-related delays in getting things off the ground, and the fact that nobody wants to pay to go into a studio that technically has no prior experience. hopefully now that i've gotten over this hump i can start pulling in some more business, and realize my dream of quitting my lame day job to do the recording thing full-time.

anyways, i'm going to stop my rambling...the songs can be heard at www.myspace.com/ironkladaudio they're the top 2 on there

Well.. the recording sounds pretty decent, personally I would have tried to go for a bit more of an in-your-face sound on the guitars... but what really bugs me is the band itself. I can't stand highschool hardcore.. *shudder*

Sounds pretty good. It's really bass heavy in some parts though, and the guitars should be a bit more up front, like mistral said.

I wouldn't get too far ahead of yourself after one session with a bunch of high school punks. :D
.

Yeh.. "So what kind of experience do you have?" "Well, I recorded this one hardcore band.." - doesn't sound much more impressive than not having recorded any bands. But, slowly the business might start to roll in.. particularily if the band liked the result and tell their friends.

For realz, you should have popped out of the womb with a studio in one hand and a client base in the other. Noob.

On a lighter note, sounds pretty good for what it is. Keep up the good work!

oh believe me, i'm not quitting my day job anytime soon...but there's 234235435636 bands around here looking for somewhere to record, and these guys personally know and play shows with a lot of them, so hopefully these 4 little songs will act as a step in the right direction

and yea, the guitars are a bit quiet - i listened to the whole thing on something other than my monitors for the 1st time today, and the guitars just don't translate like i hoped...i also think the hi-hat ended up too loud...but that's what happens when they come in on saturday, and say they need everything to be done by wednesday

sounded good to me. i agree the 6 string/guitars were abit in the back on my playback system...but the recording was easy to listen to. good sht mon...

the vocals and drums and bass had a nice sound.

what kind of studio monitors do you use?

Ahh, the exuberance of youth! Ride the high, but keep one foot on the ground. Nice job. Damn near phenominal? You must have been very excited when you typed that. That's great, you should be excited, and keep the fire stoked. Just make sure you don't charge off to drum up new clients all cocky and full of yourself based on this one success, and be critical of your work enough to learn and build on it's shortcommings.
Look, I'm no one to tell you anything, just some generic advice for what it's worth. Keep it real and have a ball.

yeah, i was pretty stoked at the time...i've actually listened to the mix a few times in the car, and come to the conclusion that it isn't THAT great, but it was basically more than i expected for my 1st full session - the sheer satisfaction of hearing the fruits of my labor after spending thousands of dollars and countless hours getting things up and running had me running on high for a couple days

now it's time to find some more projects to work on
