I give up...........

Three days ago I bought an m audio duo and cakewalk. Took a day and a half (and uncountable hours with both m audio and cakewalk tech support) to get the sound card configured on my toshiba satellite laptop.
I've spent the last day and a half trying to get the latency issue solved, but alas, I've pulled out all my hair and just cant take it anymore.
Tomorrow I'm making the two hour drive back to the Guitar Center and I'm returning the duo and buying an mr-8. I knew I shoulda done it in the first place, but "computer based" recording just seemed so damn enticing. Oh well, live and learn.
The duo was appealing cause it had preamps, but the mr8 doesn't (does it?). Should I pick one up while I'm there? If so, any suggestions on a mid level one?

P.S. M audio tech support was the absolute worst. One even told me "I can't spend anymore time with you cause you're too dense to follow instructions"! Ooohhhhh, if I could got my hands on him.......Avoid this company like the plague.

I've been to their site looking for information on the oxygen 8.....worthless! The schematic on the MR8 shows preamps and being a user I say go for it!

great choice on the MR8

You may want to consider a Behringer UltraGain Pro Mic2200, pre-amp/phantom supply. It is 2-channel, has some EQ and, to my ears is super quiet. Guitar Center should have one for $99.00 and you can either rack mount it, or put on little rubber feeties. Too bad about the laptop. I'd considered the same approach, but heard too many horror stories.
 
Do I know how you feel. Computer recording still has some way to go as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, you might want to get the Audio Buddy pre amp. This is the most popular low end pre amp and should suit your needs just fine. The MR8 does have a pre amp, but I am getting much better results with the audio buddy.
By the way, you can still use your laptop to edit and mix the tracks once you have recorded them in the MR8. That is the beauty of going this route.
 
I am a digital recording novice and a semi computer novice, but using the MR-8 and PC (w/ ntrack) has been the easiest thing that I think I could have done. These guys/gals on this forum have helped it even be easier.
 
Sounds like the way to go, Hairless Jenny. I love using my VF-160 along with my puter.

I have n-Track and PG Music's Power Tracks Pro Audio 8 on my Computer and both work awesome with the VF-160.

I'm thinking about getting an MR-8 as a take anywhere musical notepad.

I have to agree with Gospel, were it not for this BBS I'd still be getting the same cheesy results from my PC, and probably never would have bought the MR8. I use a Behringer UB1002 mixer, which has preamps (of course) as well as phantom power. I think I only gave $80 for it. As far as the PC is concerned now, I'm beginning to use it more now that I have n-track. I'm still learning, but I can't believe the power of all this stuff that's available now.

Get the preamp. I shouldn't mention the company that made mine, from the sound of your note, but the MR-8 needs help with most inputs I've tried.
