Taking the slow road
also a challenge,
1. writing a good song
2. writing good music to accompany the lyrics
3. arranging it all
4. reading and playing the arrangement correctly, or even good enuf
5. finding the time for 1 to 4 and to then set up recording studio for decent
6. levels, eq, compression, limiting digital spikes/horrible noise from hot signals
7. and for each instrument
8. keeping/tossing material
9. staying orgainized
10. taking notes on all i'm doing
11. completing any of the above things before getting burned out, changing my mind, having to get away for food, rest, phone calls, work, air, water, life...
12. returning to a started project and having any recollection of why I thought what I've done so far sounds like anything worth listening to... or, wondering why I had abandoned such great sounding stuff only to return now with no idea what the original inspiration or motivation was, or how to play it again, since i most likely didn't do such a good job on numbers 2,3, & 4.
13. (rinse) deleting it all bc i needed room for the new project.
14. (repeat) back to #1.

anyone conquer all of this recently?

I tend to concentrate on 1 - 3 - play it live for a year, then record it... the rest usually (but not always) falls into place fairly quickly...

Yup, there's a reason everyone doesn't have platinum-selling albums
and why a lot of musicians still say, "You want fries with that?"

But other than that, everything's OK, right?

Welcome to the party, pal! :drunk:

I've been living your "challenge" for many years now. It's not easy doing it alone. There a many things you need to figure out and keep on top of without ever allowing yourself the luxury of just focusing on *your* thing and forgetting the rest 'cuz someone else has that covered.

Ahhhhh...the simplicity of being able to stroll into a ready-to-go studio and just plug in and play *your part* and not worry about anything else....where the mic's placed...what mic/pre to use...oh wait, the damn headphones are too loud...the tape just spooled off the reel...where's that damn adapter...etc...etc...etc...and heck...sometimes there's even a gopher there to bring you coffee and snacks while someone else deals with all the "technical" stuff.
But where's the fun in that? ;)

What gets to me from time to time....is the time!
When you work alone...everything moves at 1/4 speed...except the clock. The clock moves 4 times faster than normal.
You spend a few hours working and you only accomplish a piece of what you need to do.
And then...people (friends and non-musicians) think you're just goofing around and taking forever....like come on already...get that next album finished, what's taking you so long??? :D

I've given up so much over the years so I can spend hours....days....holed up in my studio alone chipping away at it.
Sometimes the endpoint looks so distant, almost unperceivable...other days things move along quickly.
It certainly is a way of life, and it's no surprise to me why most people that do it either get totally submerged in it forever...or reach a point where they just totally walk away from it.
It certainly is a commitment...and you often feel like you've been committed. :)

You don't conquer all of that at once. Baby steps.

Yesterday, I planned to do some submixing of guitars, bass and drums on about 10 songs. Most were drums. Aside from taking the kids to a party and picking them up, I was at it 7 or so hours. I got 3 done !

Home Recording is indeed a big challenge, but that is the beauty of it.
If it was easy it wouldn't be half as much fun or so rewarding.
You know what, I'll settle for easy ! I don't need hardship or challenges for something to be fun or for rewards or to see beauty !
Gimme easy !! Gimme it now !!! :D
