I figured out why the Sound Devices USBPre 2 allows -40db outpot!

The whole purpose of a preamp is to kick a -40db mic level up to 0db line level, and I didn't appreciate why Sound Devices would provide the option to cut the preamp functionality of the USBPre 2 out of the signal chain by providing the option to output -40db.

Any guesses?

It allows you to insert the USBPre 2 into an existing signal chain between the mic and existing pre to capture audio you otherwise could not. I was recording a gawd awful cover band the other night with a very talented guitar player and it hit me that my new toy would have allowed me to capture his efforts separately from the rest of the band.

I'm a little jazzed right now.
