Hello

I've had the T12 for months now, hoping it would fix my issues with workflow. I had the Komplete Audio 1 and it didn't have enough inputs to put in my Octatrack, route it to my speakers and headphones, etc.

Since I wanted to have an interface to listen to what I am doing, while being able to plug my Octatrack, mic, instruments into the same thing, I chose the Model 12. But, probably because I don't know that much about the topic, I couldn't do anything at all, that I wanted to do, yet. Btw, I use Windows 10.

I can't find any great tutorials on anything I want to do, practically nothings answers my queastions.

I want to start using Ableton, or record in Audacity: Nothing shows up in Audacity as I put the switch from the Input channel 7/8 to PC. I can hear my Octatrack through my headphones when switched to LIVE, but nothing gets to my PC.

In tutorials where people select channels beyond 1 and 2 in Ableton or elesewhere, they see a list of all the T12 channels - I only get 1/2.

When I switch my T12 into DAW controller mode, I only get audio in the left side of my headphones from pc.

ChatGPT tells me to route the channels into my PC through the T12 Interface, obviously it doesn't work, ChatGPT only gives instructions that don't work.

I also tried to route channel 6 to pc, in order to use my microphone - I wasted close to 3 hours trying to download drivers and whatelse and looking at my settings (which also are like a desert on windows 10 compared to what I see in MAC tutorials for example) etc etc, only to then just plug it into Channel 2 and use it from there.

Like that, as I can't figure out how to use any of the channels except for 1 and 2 on my PC (while channel 1 plays back pc audio), the thing is basically completely useless for what I actually want to do. I don't give it the fault, maybe it's design, but I think I just don't know what I'm doing, or at least it feels like it. I can't pinpoint the error. But for what I am doing, i basically have a 12 channel mixer where I can only use 2 channels, which I use for the basics of an audio interface... Please help me

Why buy something when you haven’t researched it at all? I don’t even know what a model 12 is in the first place - I wouldn’t buy one with out a thorough research on the subject.

Hi doppelsmoker.

I'm assuming you are referring to the Tascam Model 12?

From what I've read, these are great units. I'm considering the Model 2400 if / when my Soundcraft packs it in.

Have you checked to make sure that the Tascam is selected within Abelton, as the audio interface, using ASIO drivers?

If you are only seeing two channels, it sounds to me, like Abelton is looking at your internal soundcard, or some other audio device, then the Model 12.

Software can be quirky. Perhaps download a copy of Reaper, just to confirm it isn't something with Abelton, which I've never used.

I use a free program called 'LevelMeter'. This is my metering before it hits my DAW (Samplitude). It might be a useful tool for you to verify whether each input is even getting a signal into your computer, and remove Abelton from the equation.

If you are in Audacity, if I remember correctly, it doesn't support ASIO. Therefore you will have to use the Windows drivers. That being said, You will need to select the inputs to what channel you want, and output will be probably channel 1 & 2. Usually headphone or other output is to route to another external sound system (like DJ's route mains to PA, headphones the their headphone amp.

I don't use Audacity that often, but I think for each channel you either add a stereo track and it will select two channels, or you use mono tracks and add the channel you want to record.

THIS! ⬆️

If you have Ableton, there are tutorials online for setting up Ableton with the Model 12.

You might want to download Reaper as it should easily set up the Tascam as the input device if you have installed the Tascam drivers.

I had no idea there were any current DAW's that didn't support ASIO. It's been around for almost 30 years.

Move on from Audacity.

Because Audacity is Open Source, and source code is available, they can't distributed it with ASIO support due to licensing restrictions by Steinberg who owns the system. However, if you know programming and have the tools, you can use the Audacity source code and compile a version with ASIO support, but it is only for personal use, not for public distribution.

Give that ^a good read (there is a mention of a limited monitoring function) and if you still have problems sign up to the forum (but DON'T desert us!) Matt Houghton is a very experienced reviewer.

I second (third?) the move to Reaper. Ableton is a very powerful DAW but I think a bit "quirky" to setup? There is a shedload of help and advice for Reaper.

I will NOT hear a word against Audacity! It is totally free and about as simple to setup and use as a DAW can be and be as useful as it is. No, it does not natively support ASIO but other drivers work perfectly well and you really only need ASIO for its low latency capability, playing a VSTi for example.

Dave.

THAT is a fact. I like it, but I HATE it. WAYYYYYYYYY more trouble than it's worth. I have Reaper, but moving between DAWs is such a PITA.
I'm moved to a Zoom L12 mixer for recording. Reaper is very good for importing tracks from the Zoom, and does the job, mostly. It can't find many of my plugins. Ableton has a hard time with my imports.
Go figure.
