i have a shure 58a beta mic. what do you call a device which i can connect the mic unto it and make your voice different like robot voice, chipmunk, male to female, female to male, phaser voice? coz im confusing of what is vocal processor, voice enhancer, voice harmonizer, etc......

in general term whats the device really called?

Vocoder. It's a synth that uses your voice as a modulator for synthesis.

Or something like that.

A few analog modelling synths have one added to the synth. Like the Korg MS 2000 or Roland has a few dedicated and combo synths that do vocoding.

re

all right thnx, :), who the hell are you jake? your everywhere lol

A harmonizer will give you the female and chipmunk voices. Some vocal processors have harmonizers and vocoders.

Why do you need that crap? Those effects are pretty limited and cheesy.

oh, hmmm? does language matters for any mic devices? well of course il be singing in english.....well :) please tell me any devices good to pair with mic

You have to have a preamp. The Audio Buddy is a popular cheapie.

Effects depends on how you are going to be mixing. Are you mixing on a hardware mixer or in the computer?

im using computer mixer, all right thnx anyway, i already chosen a preamp for my mic thnx

The device you are seeking is not a Vocoder, which is a very ancient gadget used to make the old Bromo Seltzer commercials. What you want is called a Voice Changing Microphone which uses "bucket brigade" technology to offer five different voices. You can find them on Halloween sites. where they are used to create elf and monster voices.

You can do all of that with a Harmonizer in a hardware box or software.

Jerb- What preamp did you decide on? If you are recording on a computer you can get a lot of different 'plug-ins' that affer different effects. What software are you using?

The original question asked for a specific device, not how similar effects could be achieved with more expensive equipment.

Edit: By the way, all of these cheap (under ten dollars) devices include their own electret mike. It is all that is needed if what you want is vocal distortion.
