I was just listening to a cd that I hadnt picked up for almost 8 years now. It was Collective Soul's first album, Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid. I loved it when I was in high school, probably because I went to high school with these guys. I remember it being a cool cd. I remember it being full of life and totally professional. Now that I listen to it, I realize its really not recorded all that well. The cymbals sound like they were fake, the bass is there, but you cant feel it in the mix, and the overall volume is not very loud compared to more recent cds. I pass by the place they recorded it at all the time, and I think about the fact that that cd has sold a million several times over. The stuff I am doing is much better than what they had to work with. It wasnt about catchy effects or perfectly captured drums, or complete saturation of volume, it was about good music. That gives me hope, hope that we can do this, that we can be successful, it really is just about the music. Thats my two cents for today.

I agree, but the goal is always the fabulous performance coupled with a mix of outstanding clarity and space.

When you have one without the other it's like eating strawberries with no cream

Yo Blount:

It's kind of like a matter of "timing." Think of Les Paul and Mary Ford and multiple tracks and Mucho Reverbo....

How about some of the songs Frankie Lane did? "Mule Train," "My Heart Knows What the Wild Goose Knows," and, "That's My Desire." Each a masterpiece for its time. But now, well, they are still great but it's all in a moment of time and creativity and who is the audience.

Green Hornet:D :p :p
