I'm looking for a new mic but I'm really having trouble deciding on which one, the mics I was looking at are, tthe Audio Technica 4047, the Mojave ma 200 or 201 Fet, or the AKG c214, or the akg 414 B ULS not the new XLS I have a focusrite forte interface, and hopefully this friday getting a Universal Audio 610 pre, the mic will only be used for vocals, male and female, thanks guys.

Mics for vocals, more than most other applications, tend to be singer specific. A mic or two for female vocalists. A mic or two for baritone male vocalists. A different mic for rock screamers. No one mic rules them all, at least when it comes to vocals.

That being said, you probably should think long term about which group of vocal mics should be in your locker. The mics you mention will likely work well for some singers, but not quite as well for other singers. You may wish to consider a variety of vocal mics. One suggestion would be the 3 Zigma CHI modular system. It has four different LD capsules modeled after four different vintage European vocal mics (E LAM 251, U47, U67 and C12). They are quite nice. One mic amp and two or three capsules would probably set your up for most vocal situations. Just a thought.

Thank you for the recommendation that sounds a bit out of my price range though, how much roughly would it cost?

I have all the vintage Neumanns and the Elam251 Tele. Ribbons From AEA , Manley, Soundelux, Wunder, Pearlman, Peluso, and all are totally different then the other......To be honest though if I was to buy my first mic for vocals right now it would be the Lauten Audio Atlantis. That thing sounds gorgeous and it has 3 voices. Well built. Great vocal mic. I am seriously thinking on getting it to have for quick setups and remote recording of vocalists with my laptop. You should at least have a look. It's a little more but it gives you 3 mics in one. I am a big believer mics rule not pres. I'd always invest in a better mic before anything.

Cool that the Zigma thing is there but the capsule is only part of the story right? The Elam uses an Ac701 or 6072 tube and circuit, the U47 a VF14, the U67 a EF86, C12 not sure but I think a 6072 all that contribute to the sound. The electronics are all different. The body size, grill. Anyway just thought I would chip in. I would check out the Lauten at least.

I tested a Mojave 200 and was expecting great thigns considering I really like the 100's, but I was not impressed. I only had the chance to test it out on two different voices, so it's possible these were just bad matches. I think that the Audio Techinicas will provide the most balanced sound and best chance to sound good on more sources for you.

That Lauten is the shizits! Also for a budget mic, the new ADK Thor has three voices. I have never found a voice that one of my ADK TT's doesnt sound great with. The discontinued Kel HM7U is a very good single pattern mic. And as has been said, the AT4047 is a really really nice all-purpose vocal mic.

I really like the miktek CV4 paired with some of the DIY 51X stuff that's out there. sounds super expensive through an AML ez1073-500 into a Classic API VC528 with the filters set to 18khz and 80khz.
