Hi, from a long-time reader but seldom poster. I thought I should give a little report on what's been happening since I started using Sonar last October.
I got the last available copy of 2.2XL from Manny's Music for $350, then got a free upgrade to 3.0 about a month later. My computer system was hot stuff when I got it over three years ago (1.2 AMD T-Bird, 384 Megs RAM, 75 Gig HD, 21-inch monitor, MS ME, USB, Firewire) but now it's too primitive to run 3.0 -- hence 2.2. I have two mics, a Shure SM57 and 58. I use a Tascam Portastudio 05 I bought 16 years ago as a mixer, running stereo line outs into the line-ins of a Soundblaster 5.1 Platinum (remember, 3-year old system). I have a Casio CZ101 I bought 16 years ago for midi input. I record using a variety of old Fender, Gibson, and Rickenbacker electric guitars, using old tube-driven Marshall and Fender amps, and some Martin acoustic guitars. The synths are mainly organs, piano, and strings.
Most of the project songs are around 10 tracks. I haven't had any real problems yet. I have the regular manual and Sonar Power open to whatever it is I'm working on, and so far things have been very much straight-forward. There have been no problems installing and running the program, none with recording, none with editing, none with mixing and producing a mastered stereo final mix. There is a world of difference between Sonar versus using multi-track analog equipment!
I just finished recording my 39th and final track of the Canon in D, which I've been working on since last January. I'm doing it all using guitars -- no midi. I have 25 tracks I've kept for editing. I have zero dropouts on playback, and no audio abnormalities. Now I just have to edit this mass into coherence.
I've noticed that I should quit Sonar about every half hour during extended editing sessions, then re-open it to continue. Otherwise, I start getting some screen color abnormalities, followed by the program locking up. I started quiting the program when I noticed the color abnormalities (the screen goes to black and white), but it's locked up once when I continued anyway. I had to re-boot then, but hadn't lost any data.
That's been the extent of my problems. The good stuff is that things have been very easy so far.
Sonar 2.2XL is good.
