I can't activate input/output ports on Cubase 5

On the Device Setup screen on Cubase 5, all of my inputs and outputs are inactive and I have no way of activating them. They are all "visible" but they are still inactive. What can I do to activate them? I am unable to listen to playbacks and record because of this; I really need help.

PS: I checked the instructional manual and the help feature, to no avail.
 
First check in windows Device Manager to see that your audio card has a working driver and says "this device is working properly" After that make sure you have the right ASIO driver selected in cubase and your busses set up (correctly) in VST connections.
 
I think they only show up as active if you set them up in the VST Connections window.

SO on the devices menu click "VST Connections" Then you have to se up the inputs and outputs.
