hi,

i have an old sonar file with midi data and audio tracks that i wanted to record again after a while. i do everything necessary to set up the recording (i.e. arming tracks, setting up inputs, etc.) and i select the few midi tracks to record. when i press record, i can see the record meters moving as if it were picking up some audio data from my midi keyboard, but when i stop the recording, there is an audio clip that shows up, but with no visible wave oscillations in the newly recorded audio clip (and when i play the audio track, there is definitely no sound).

ok, so i try it again, this time the record meters don't even show, as if it were NOT picking up any audio data from my midi keyboard, and when i stop recording, no audio clip even shows up. odd...

so finally, i thought of something: to copy all of the midi data and paste it onto a new sonar file. i add an audio track and do the same process: it records and an audio clip shows and wave thingies are there and when i play the clip, i can hear things! so i'm happy, then i save the file. it happens again: the first recording after save makes an audio clip with no wave thingies, the second recording after save doesn't even make an audio clip at all.

i've had this problem for a very long time and the ways i've fixed it before was by messing around with sonar's audio options, randomly doing the wave profiler thing, just about anything, and magically it would work. but i wish to get rid of this problem once and for all, or at least to KNOW EXACTLY what to do when it happens again.

can anyone PLEASE help me? thanks

Hi and welcome to the board.

I haven't seen Sonar do this exactly, but I have seen it do some weird things with corrupted files.

It sounds like you have some weird things going on. To try and sort these out, try these steps -

1. Create a totally new file.
2. Record something
3. Save it
4. Can you now record anything else?

This will tell you whether or not your old data file is having some issue.

Try this also - Close Sonar, delete the AUD.INI file and re-open Sonar and let it re-run the wave profiler. Test it again using your old data file.

IF you still get the same thing, please let us know -

1. Details on your PC, Sonar version and sound card
2. Exactly how your are setting up your new midi track
3. How you have your midi keyboard configured to talk to your sound banks

Thanks,

I got confused reading your question. What are you trying to record? Audio or MIDI? If MIDI, are you wanting to record the actual MIDI data or are you plugging the audio outs into the in's on your sound to record actual audio.

If you record MIDI data, you need something to play it back.. all it is is note on/off, pitches etc, it doesn't contain actual audio.

I was guessing MIDI in to trigger a synth and then recording the audio output.........

Maybe

ok hmm i guess i didn't do what you told me to do in the order in which you told me to do it.

i deleted the aud.ini file and tried recording on the existing (i guess "corupted") file. nope, the same thing happens: yes clip no sound, then no clip no sound.

so i opened a brand new file, recorded something; it worked. i saved, recorded again; it still worked. i closed the file, reopened it; my lord it still worked! ok, so i went back to the old file, and copied all midi data to a new file, recorded, and it worked. then i saved it, recorded, and it worked!!

so does this mean that the file was corrupt? if so, how's that even possible? or perhaps it was the aud.ini that saved me, because, before this thread, i did try copying the existing midi data onto a new track, having the same problem. so wow, thank you so much for the help!!!!! :-D

Weird - from what you said, I can't really see how it was the AUD.INI file that had the problem, but hey - it looks like it has cleaned itself up.

Sometimes Sonar files get corrupted - normally seems related to a specific plugin or piece of automation.

Your solution -- cut everything, paste it in a new track -- has saved me a few times too.

You can also hold down the SHIFT key when you open a song and this allow you to selectively load your effects. Might help you track down what was causing problems in the old file.

Make sure to check out the work file's attributes, right click on the work file, then properties, make sure it doesn't say "read only", when ever I re-open a project from a CD-R it's set to read only, so... no saving, I just put a tick in the box for "archive", and problem solved.

We're talking about computers here. Stranger things has happened, that's why God created "backup"... :D

yay! replies, replies!

actually, it wasn't the aud.ini file that was the problem! see, i deleted the "corrupted" file and renamed the test file (with the copied data from the "corrupted" file) from "hmm" to "un jour en forêt" the original title of the *.wrk file. so i tried to record again and it stopped working! :-O oddly enough, a weird idea came into my head; i renamed it back to "hmm" and it worked again, renamed it to "ê" and it didn't work, then again to "e" and it worked!

so all in all, it was the file name (of strange characters) of the .wrk file that screwed the recording stuff up!! geez, computers can be weird...

A-hah! A lack of F.I.G.S. internationalisation Q&A methinks :D

Well found!

Which version of Sonar are you using, btw?

No, not really. Sonar can only handle american keyboard settings. Characters like ø and å don't work at all. ;)

Really? That shows an interesting approach to internationalisation....

It's not that hard to do.

Can you use reserved character sets for track names and busses or does that freak it out too?

Q.

hmm i named on of the tracks with a non-generic character and sure enough it stopped recording. however, renaming it back to an appropriate character did not fix the problem, for it still did not record. i had to restart sonar (2.0 btw) completely in order for it to work again. :-D

fun stuff

No, track names must also only contain enghlish carachters.
