"I Am Yours Forever" - Acoustic Ballad - First Song I've Ever Fully Written, Recorded

Hey guys,

I've just finished recording and mixing a song I've written myself for the first time. This is an achievement for me because I usually record lots of little minute long ideas or phrases but they never materialise into a full song and usually get left to gather dust on the hard drive!

Anyway, if you guys have some spare time, please critique both the song and the mix.

The song is 'I Am Yours Forever' and is on my soundclick -

Some information about the recording:

Guitar: Martin DX1
The guitar was recorded using a Studio Projects B1 through Toneport UX2 as a preamp.
The vocals were also recorded using the same microphone and preamp.
Mixing was done within Sonar.

anybody care to offer some critique? it would be much appreciated!

I really like the songwriting in this one - I really like it. The performance recording is good too. I think you've done a good job overall. :D:):D:)

Thanks guys. The Martin DX1 is lovely to play. Such a nice rounded tone which suits my playing. It's not overly full bodied and the highs aren't too sharp, just tame enough for a lovely smooth ring.

bump - this deserves a few more listens/comments AFAIC....:D

thanks ido for your generous appraise! i'm curious to hear whether people think the guitars are too thin/metallic...........if they are then it may be a common problem in my acoustic recordings that is due to the recording environment and would definitely give me a better understanding of my monitors and maybe i will think to tame it a bit in future recordings.

I am listening through headphones so not a very good representation of your mix, but as far as I can hear it sounds good.

The only thing that stands out to me is it seems that its all panned right a little bit? Maybe its just late ;)

Nice song though and thanks for sharing ~

I like the song, composition, playing, singing - nice job!

On my monitors, there's a high frequency jagged edge that maybe could be eq'ed out - it's more noticeable on the vocals.

Nice song. I'm looking at the DX1 to buy at the moment. I've heard some good and bad things about them. But I played it myself today and it was pretty sweet. Hard to tell in the store when all the guitars from cheap to expensive have shitty old strings on them

Nice song. I'm thinking about buying the DX1...you happy with it? I kinda thought some of the other songs on your page were a little bright...could be your mic or mixing I guess.

I played the DX1 today and it sounded quite nice

I liked the song. Good job. The vocal is a bit difficult to hear. A little muddy. I'm thinking it's because the guitar and the vocal are panned into the same space in the mix. I would recommend the vocal and the guitar be separated a bit more, to give each it's own space. I think it would make each a bit easier to hear. Great potential there.

i liked the singing right at the end more than the rest which suggest maybe you are in the wrong key for your voice.....it just sounded more uplifting then for some reason.

also there are way too many variations on the melody for the listener to know what the song acctually is.

so i would be inclined to simplify it to give the whole thing a more obvious structure.

also the guitar playing style needs more variation too for the same reason as the vocal.

then i might have a tune playing on my brain that i might even remember tommorow.

the mix itself was fine.

The vocals are panned slightly right. Why?

Other than that, I think you have a real good song here.

Agree that the singing sounds better toward the end of the song. Otherwise, nice song, nice mix. I guess you could think about doubling the vocals at some points to give them a bit more presence, but it sounds good now.
