Here is what my kick and snare sound like now (this is dry, no verb, no pan, no eq)

I want to be here:

Please help...mic placement, eq, compression..whatever, just let me know...thanks!

Your snare needs to be tuned up a little, and the snares themselves tightened a tad. This will sharpen you snare and it will cut through more.

To my relatively untrained ears the second drum sound seems to have a fair amount of limiter applied.

You can trick up your sound with some top end eq to lift the hats and cymbals, and a bit down low for more snare and bass punch.
Some reverb to add space, and compression to smooth things out. Then finish it off with quite a hard limiter to get that sound you want

What is the source for the first track? Is it live or waves or sound module.

If its live, closer micing of the snare and focus on the 1000 to 2000 range. Roll off below350. Very rough guess here.

The kick needs roll off above 100 and below 50, push 3-4 db with narrow Q around 3000 to get that slappy sound.

If its waves, get another set of wave files. You can't EQ it that much and still have it sound right.

If its a sound module either get a different set of drums closer to the sound you are looking for or tweak the basic tones using the above ranges to get close.

Compress the crap out of the hi hat i.e long release. Turn up the volume on the snare. Put the 2500-3500 range on the kick through a lightly applied short reverb. Put the snare on a good room verb. Mabe a slight gate on the snare.

Compress the overall drums about 1-2 db, 6:1 ,moderate attack moderate release. Better yet limit it slightly as reccomended by Bulls Hit.

That's about as close as I can guess.

Also how many mics did you use for your kick and snare?
Because overheads play a big part in how the snare sounds also.

I think it's your mic placement. I don't think the second drum track is good, either.

Er, I forgot to add that that 2nd drum clip sounds a lot like older Get Up Kids.

the second drum track is the beginning to a jimmy eat world song...I am a huge fan of their sound

The track is live and I am not even sure what you mean by waves file :)

Right now the only 2 mics I have on it are the kick and snare. Trying to get those right first...that kick is driving me nuts! Still not getting the sound I want. I think I got a little closer with the res head off...but still don't quite have the mic placements right...I am btw using a b1 on it.

oh if any one wants to take a stab at the kick (eq or whatever) to see if that track is salvageable...I would be most appreciative!

You're working with only 2 mics? I use 4 (I only have 4 i/o's), the overheads make all the difference.

Alright, I listened to your track again. First off, how are the mics placed? Typically, I mic the snare (SM57) about an inch over and into the head. For the bass drum (Shure Beta 52), I point the mic at the beater, 5 or so inches away. To me, it sounds like you don't have a hole in your bass drum head. If you don't, cut a hole for micing purposes. Overhead mics are crucial in basic drum micing, they capture the overall sound of the kit.

This is what I'm working with.

Well I tried a remix.
It sounds........different from what it did. Not sure it's what your after though.
Here's the first 20-odd seconds

Man, you overcompressed that kick...sounds like a kick drum is hitting the capsule of a mic and not a kick drum head. I don't think there was much to do to salvage the track, it's all about mic placement.

bulls...Thank you very much for giving that a whurl...seems like I am overpowering the mic, and the sound is not savable. I am going to pick up a kick drum mic tonight and give that a try...I will post again after that...THANKS!
