I am getting echo/background noise

Hello I am using an audio technica condenser mic 3 pin xlr plugged into an alesis multimix 8 usb board. I have spent hours tuning the volumes and gains. But on play back i am hearing a hiss/echo-ish background noise.

I could upload a sample file is my description is not clear. But if anyone has run into this problem i would love to hear your solution.

First the hiss issue - have you switched on phantom power?
Secondly the echo - are you monitoring thru speakers? That could cause a loop between the mic and the speakers.

Post a sample if you can.
