So iv got this problem.

im like the "main songwriter" for two bands with diffrent taste (i also play bass in one of them) but when i try write songs for them i always have the same really basic tune in my head when im trying to work them out.

this is really driving me mad!
anyone know ways to get this outta my head

Listen to a bunch of songs by artists who are in the same genre as the bands to are writing for. Listen to favorites of the band members.

Or try writing on a different instrument than you normally do.

I hope they never play their sets back to back on the same stage! :D

So...

Do you always write in the same key?
Do you always start with the same chords or sequences?
Do you always write on the same instrument?
Do you always use the same tempo?

Change it up.

Most of the time, I have music already there and so working out a melody isn't difficult {though I don't think I write good ones, just unheard of ones !}. But if I come up with a melody in the absence of music, I'm forever plagued by the thought that I've unconsciously lifted it from somewhere coz they sort of sound familiar. Even this morning, I was having a dream and in the dream I was listening to some music and the song had this lovely little riff. In the dream I said, "oh, I'd like to nick this, but I can't". But when I woke up, I realized it was a dream so it was indeed up for grabs so I hummed it into my dictaphone and I've fleshed it out a bit. But I keep thinking "am I going to hear a song in my collection one day that this actually came from ?".
For your specific problem, do these songs you write actually end up sounding the same ? Try running the sequence backwards and come up with the most ridiculous melody you can think of and change it bit by bit and go from there.
