Next year I will be living with a drummer and bass player and would like to get into recording just for kicks. I'm not really sure what I need as far as compression, eq, preamps, etc. goes. I am considering getting a Roland VS880; would the internal processor take care of compression, eq, etc? As far as mics go I think I would get a Rode NT-1 and 3 Shure SM57s. Would this be adequate for drums, bass, electric and acoustic guitar recording?
Thanks

Jon

Dunno bout the Roland, but I found about 45 posts that talk about it by clicking on the search facility at the top of this page. Here's one interesting one, picked almost at random:

As for the Rode, yeah I love mine. SM 57s are industry standards, hard to go wrong there. You'll need to preamp the mics, either with a mixer or preamps. Don't forget ace cable, that's important.

Compression and EQ? Hmmm... are you sure you wouldn't rather do all this with a computer and use software for everything except playing the music? :)

computer...
6 or 8 chanels mixer... (without faders)
alesis nanocompresor... (to rec in the pc)
2 condencers, sm57, sm58, akg d112.

ps. there are some speciall mics for the roland vsr-x (DR-10, DR-20)

Maybe the PC for some the VS880 for others.
I wn both an 880 and a 1680 (VS)
I love them.
Especially the portability.
You don't have to use Roland's special CD.
It has dig out that you can send directly to a generic cd burner.
It has verbs, delays, eqs on every channel, compression, amp simulators, microphone simulators,(high end mic emulation circuits) special effects like vocoders, dj, robotics, chorus, pitch shift, 3d sounds...etc...etc.
And there is a download called VS to Wav that converts the songs to wav so you can play on a standard computer, and burns cds with your computer.
