Ok i know that hypercardioid means that the mic will pick up exactly what it is pointed at. Its more direct.
But do the AKG C414 mics have a switch so you can change the polar response?
What would the cymbal for hypercardioid look like?
Sorry, im not very good with tech stuff.

Cheers dude.
See how the C414s have two sides to them, how do you know which side to use?
Sorry for the stupid questions, i dont know much about this stuff at all!

That sounds like figure 8 pattern. It picks up the same in front and in back of the mic with the null points at the sides.

Even hypercardoids will have a rear lobe where they pick up some sound to the rear. This is rather oversimplified, but a main difference in the polar pattern between a cardioid and a hyper-cardioid is that the rear lobe or lobes of a hyper-cardioid tend to have a narrower angle of pickup but are often more sensitive within those angles, whereas a regular cardioid will have a wider rear lobe but be a little less sensitive within that width (the lobe is usually wider, but shorter.)

The advantage to hyper-cardioid is that there is usually a narrower angle to the rear in which you have to have silence in order for the mic not to pick it up. In other words, it is less likely that a hyper will pick up much sound at, say, 150 degrees or 210 degrees (30 degrees either side of straight back) than a cardioid.

There is no such thing in reality as a truely uni-directional microphone. The closest you can get is something like a shotgun mic or a parabolic dish mic.
