OK, this one should get a lot of sarcastic responses, and deservedly so. :D

I was bored and a funny thought popped into my head. I'm wondering how good at absorbing sound the human body is. If you've ever played live, you've heard the difference between the sound in an empty room during sound check as opposed to that same room full of people.

So, just out of curiosity, if you had 3 people standing in each corner of your room, would that be better than not having anything in the corners? I figure if each person weighs an average of 150lbs, you've got 450lbs of....something.....in those corners.

Don't worry, it's not as if I'll ever try this. I don't even have 12 friends.:laughings:

But I'm building up a pretty good collection of bodies in the freezer in my basement. Maybe I'll pin them up on the walls one day.

Would they be the enemies ? Keep your friends close and your enemies closer still, and all that........:D

Actually, this may not be a bad idea. I could make a living this way. I'd insist on sitting though !

In all seriousness though, the way a hall full of people soaks up sound in comparison to when it's empty tends to indicate something....

Ugly bag of mostly water..-Startrek the movie.
Yes I have several bodies stacked in all corner of the studio and it works just fine ...but the cost of Lysol spray is killing me. But to tell you thew truth you start to get use to the smell..........NORMAN ..yes mother I'll be there in a moment I have to end talking to these nice people. Hell it worked for Ed Gians also.

:D :D :D

Thanx guys. nice to see we're all on the same wavelength. :D

I was also wondering, since we're just an "ugly bag of mostly water", if that makes us more "rigid fibreglass" or "egg carton".

Also, I figure an afro is better than a crew cut. I'm pretty sure that's what gave Jimi his sound. The whole band and all their freinds had 'fros. That's what gave the recordings thier warmth.

Are people in a club actually "absorbing" anything though, besides alcohol? Or are they acting more like irregular shaped diffusers deflecting soundwaves all over the place like furniture in a room?

High frequencies get absorbed. Lower ones probably get diffused like you mentioned.

I bet it works really well, Rami - at least in the LF.

Good question. But the thing that makes me wonder is the fact that..let's say you're at your desk listening, and someone leans over to grab something from the desk. If they get between you and the speaker, they block the sound. Are they "absorbing" or "diffusing"???:confused:

Fat bodies work better. Pile the corpses in the corners. A few drops of crazy glue will hold them together nicely. Thin or muscular bodies are OK for diffusion if you prop them up on stands.:)

I would cover all the bodies with something like varnish. That'll reflect the high freq stuff and allow the low feq's to get absorbed. You'll have a lively sounding room without those horrible modal standing waves. Plus no smell!!!! :p

I think they're blocking. ;)

im thinking this.

I msure they absorb some of the sound..

but i always thought things started to sound better becasue the people were just bounsing sound in different directions?

This is why I don't play my own music live. There's no one there to absorb the sound of the crickets chirping.

being an undertaker by day at least this means i can bring my job home with me :)

Absorbing. When a kick drum hits you in the chest, the fact that it is vibrating your chest means that you are absorbing it.

:D :D :D

In my younger days, definitely rigid fibreglass. With middle age just around the corner..........I'm not so sure ! :)

Hey, imagine being called a "diffusing egg carton"........

I thought that was the bone shattering.

Uh-huh...

This explains a lot.

Which one of you guys has the Jimmy Hoffa signature series bass trap?

I use the Dahmer method. Invite someone to your place and tell them you want some head.

Let's not forget the asorbing aspect of Cellulite as an added bonus...

:spank:
