Ok guys. This has been annoying me.
My laptop is producing a hum that goes thru my monitors ONLY when the laptops power adapter is in. How do I fix this? Ive tried different outlets etc.

My setup is:
Guitar>amp>dynamic mic>Dmp3 preamp>Edirol UA-25ex USB Interface(outputs to monitors)>Laptop usb port.

I also noticed thats its not JUST the USB port. If I just had the normal headphones out on my laptop plugged into one of my monitors it also happened.

Please help!
Thanks!

Perhaps your laptop is humming because it doesn't know the words...

(Forgive me one and all for wasting this much space on such a bad joke. I can't resist. I need a 12 step program.)

It sounds like a ground loop. Did you try setting the Edirol's ground lift switch to "lift"?

I did try that. It didnt help at all tbh. Made it worse from what I remember.
I'm using a Compaq Presario series. Going to upgrade the ram.
Hahaha I wish I had top of the line recording comps like some of you all.

Are you hooking up more than one device that has 3 prong power cord? The laptop has one so if anything else that you plug into it has a 3 prong grounded plug then you will get a ground loop.

I've found laptops can have a couple of issues. If it's a ground hum, get a ground lift adapter. Or if you're cheap, cut the ground on the A/C adapter (not necessarily recommended). The other thing I've found is noise from the HDD/ODD getting coupled through firewire/USB/audio out. It will coincide with HDD activity. I have this with one of my laptops. Only thing that works is unplugging A/C. Hopefully for you, it's just A/C ground.
