does anyone know how to get that huge 80's glam rock sounding snare. Like on Skid Row - "18 and Life".

Any specific type of reverb? I have a Digitech studio quad, I've tried several presets. All I end up with is a snap followed by a faded echo. I'm looking for the big THHWWWWAAAK that shoots through the song. Is there any known reverb configuration for this (decay, etc...)? any special way to tune the drum? any special compression setting?

I can tell you how to do it, but you might not like it!

Method #1.

Place a BANDANA underneath the Snare head (completely cover the shell, and then put the head on, and pull the bandana so that it's tight, while you tighten the head.
If you want less "plastic", you can put the bandana OVER the head, and then put the hoop on and tun the drum to a medium tension.
Then patch a reverb in the snare channel, and then a Gate.
This way you gate both the snare and the reverb with 1 gate.

Method #2.
Tune the snare to a medium-low tension(an 8x14" helps).Gate The Snare. Run this signal through a Large Hall Reverb.
Gate the Reverb.
This method needs 2 gates.

Then Compress it a bit.

You won't be able to really do any "intricate" snare work this way-but it will get the sound you're after.

You can also set the EQ for your snare for a boost about half way in the low range for a thump and cut the midrange 1/4 of the way on a parametric. use a hall type reverb. That should work also

Ed, where can I hear some of your recordings? All the links that I've found on this bbs to your mp3's are broke.

glam rock sound

Hey dude, 80's pop metal was highly reverbed in toms and snare. But what gives it that big snare sound you want is first of loosening the heads a little to give it a "fat" sound and they also used samples by triggers mixing the real snare sound with a trace of electronics. Pantera and Fear Factory use this a lot as well. Since we don't know exactly what effects patches Skid Row were using (it was also late 80's too) best bet is to just screw around with it until you come close. Work with different insert and loop effects in your recorder also. Good luck.
