Hey guys.

I have yamaha hs-50 monitors

they were designed to be vertically placed.

and last week, I put them horizontally down like old ns-10ms

Would it cause any harm to the speakers?

has anyone tried it this way before?

or it`s just a stupid thing I`ve done?

I think it sounds okay horizontally.

Actives? Most certainly - Check the manual. If it doesn't specifically state that they can be used horizontally, assume they should stay vertical.

Wait, you should assume that you'll damage them if you don't keep them vertical? I understand assuming they won't sound right, but can't think of any inherent reason why this should be so: why is this the assessment to make?

Also, why does this apply to active monitors in particular?

Not sure myself but first thing I thought of was heat from the amp.

Yep. Packing that much power (most active monitors are packed with over-powered amplification, which is fine - but HOT) into that small of a box means seriously thinking out heat dispersion.

Audio quality aside - Just check the manual. Many have warnings. Others go ahead and suggest that they can be positioned either way. Others say nothing (which means, keep them as they're designed).
