HS2004XL Audio Stopped

Hi all
I wonder if anyone can help me.
I recently purchased a MIDI controller and I am having some serious fun with it. The problem I have is when I try to play it within HS2004 it seems to work for a bit and then stops ie I cant hear anything and I get a 'Audio Stopped' thing at the bottom of the screen. The only way that I can seem to get it working again is by starting all over ie closing down the synth and the track and re-opening. Very strange.
What I do is open a new MIDI track (I dont want to record, just play), load the synth I want (I have the VST adaptor) and then play. The one I was using last night was the VSC I think.
Any ideas? I read on another board that I can press a reset audio button which may help this but I dont know where that is or whether it works.

I believe the reset button is a yellow exclamation point in a gray circle - it should be beside another button, (in the top toolbar) which has a white background and a more complex design on it. If I recall correctly, this is kind of like a power button for the audio engine - when its not depressed the engine is "off". You should be able to see the name of the buttons by hovering your mouse over them.
 
Are we supposed to guess what your computer's specs are? Soundcard?
 
Thanks for the replies, I press the button at it works.

The next question is what causes this? Is this what is known as a 'dropout'?
If it is then I can have a play with what others on the board have recommed.

I am using the onboard Nvidia Soundstorm audio at the moment and if needed I can get a soundcard if needed.

When an actual dropout occurs, the word "DROPOUT" appears in white on red, at the bottom of the screen (put a track on mute or solo, and you'll see similar indicators in the same area of the screen that those are active). If you don't see that, its not Cakewalk's interpretation of dropout. The soundcard is probably a good guess as to where the problem lies, but I don't know how to tell with any certainty. I will say that if you're taking recording at all seriously, you'll want a better audio interface ( = "soundcard" ) sooner or later anyway.
 
You still haven't posted your system specs. You'll get dropouts regardless of what soundcard you have if your CPU doesn't have the required horsepower.

We're not mind readers here.
 
When the audio stops i dont see the word dropout so I would have to assume that it is not a dropout.

My system specs are AMD XP 2500+ 1.83Ghz, 512Mb Ram, 1x80Gb SATA (8Mb Cache), 2x80GB ATA, On Board Audio (Nvidia Soundstorm), Abit NFS7-S Ver 2.

I have not really messed around with the cache and the latency, when I first started I was getting horrid crackling noises so I slid the latency bar to the left (not all the way) and that has stopped that.
