Thanks to this challenge I finally dare to post this recording. One of the first that I did, last July. Quick demo I guess.
Comments (cheats?): Can't really remember if I tracked the vocals with compression. I used a Meek so probably. Very likely on the backing vocals. But definately no compression added during mixing.
The guitar (DI'ed through the Meek) uses a preset chorus that came out of my soundblaster live with APS drivers. It was there when I recorded it and it was crucial during the composing stage so I guess it belongs there. Bass through the meek.
Drums: couple of dry loops that I glued together.
No compression or reverb flavours added later. Mixing was purely volume control (hell, what did I know about mixing anyway?).

My best friend on vocals, me on backing vocals, guitar (oops..), bass.

The intro sounds a little untuned to me (the guitar). For the rest good sounding; commercialy attractive; bright and punchy; compliments! The use of a plop-cap wouldn't be too much I guess only.

Leuk man..

pop screen, yeah... I didn't know much better than that my microphone looked a lot like those we were using during gigs and we didn't use pop screens then either... yeah, learned a lot. Thanks for the comments :)

of course; that was the word; pop-screen..
plop cap... :D

(just a bump for more reactions ;))

I love the vox!!Unique sounding and original,IMO.Language is cool!Bass sounds weak and would give the song more punch if EQed...but this is the HRC,so I will say the overall sound is damn good.Vox a little loud in the mix.Neat tune!Needs a guitar/keyboard solo. And the thing about the pop screen, mentioned earlier.Refreshingly different.Nice job!

Thanks man.
Good comments. The bass sounds already loud to my ears but I guess cutting the lows a bit and boosting the mids or something like that would make it cut throught the mix some more.
Just for the record: I do own a pop screen now :)
I feel blessed that this friend is such a talented singer. She and I have plans to collaborate more in the future and you all will be the first to hear the results.

Nice bass line but needs to be eq'd.

Drum loop ok for dry, need to add a few slashes and kicks for accents.

Very nice vox and backgrounds. Will sound great mixed and effected.

Got to get rid of the hum @ 1:04, 1:56 and 2:49

OOPS! Bad bass note @ 2:02 , sounds like a G that should be an A.:o

Nice job!
Ralph

You already know my thoughts on this song, so I'm not going to repeat that if you don't mind ;) (my time is so limited these days it sickens me)

So I'll just ask you a question:

Any chance you're going to remix/redo this, Christiaan?

Earlier today I cleaned up my PM box and your thoughts went with it but I remember what you said. :)
It's already been redone in a project studio once. Recorded it on one night with a real drummer and a proper guitarist. The outcome was pretty ok, ended up on 3000 cd's but I'm not too excited about it for a couple of reasons. I decided to leave it at that and move on. I don't expect me doing this song again, at least not in the near future. There are a lot more songs to write.

Nice tune-The guitar sounds out of tune to me-I think some verb would good on it too-its has that kinda compressed plunky sound..Nice progression and melody line-good singing-good bass line pretty tight-could use a little high end sparkle..maybe?? The vocals get a little overpowering in the chorus-adding another part or bringing them(lv) down a bit, might help...Yeah another guit in the chorus with a more powerful sound would be nice...Good song-decent mix for dry-I'm sure with a little tweaking you could get this sounding very radio ready.

Final bump.

Since you (kind of) asked, this is the redone version we did 1.5 weeks later with a real guitarist and drummer.
I didn't do any mixing or tracking myself on this one. The university paid for the studio time.
Tracked in one evening, one improvised rehearsal in my tiny appartment the night before so that everyone knew the structure of the song. Still have the feeling we could have done better if we had more time... oh well..

Hey, de zang is beter te verstaan! En het blijft een leuke baspartij...oops, let's switch to english...

Wow, this sounds much better! Nice! Personally I would have chosen a different guitarsound (or acoustic), but this is pleasantly weird too...I mean, I can get used to it... :)

Thanks :)
Unfortunately we hadn't much time to experiment with different sounds. Still, we spent like 7 hours on tracking and some refining. Incredible how time flies in a studio. Can't remember how we managed to fill all those hours. I think I didn't touch my bass for more than 15 minutes..

Beetje nederlands praten moet kunnen hoor. We blijven natuurlijk van die rare europeanen. :)
