Okay, here's an old one from my, uh, less stable days, that I just re-recorded. I seem to recall that any guitar effects used while tracking were allowed. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, in which case I cheated.:)

Lots of experimenting with natural reverb on this one - although it still sounds relatively dry, I think.

I don't know whether you broke the rules or not - but you did this right. I think the idea of the challange was to focus on getting the sound you want going in. These tracks are impecable. I'm listening in headphones so I don't know how that biases things, but it sounds to me like you've done a great job.

Great geetar - both acoustic and electric. Great vocals, great harp - hell, everything's great.

It's a sign of someone who knows how to work the gear when an electric guitar gets dirtier as you strike the strings harder. Great tone.

And here's a reminder to check out Rube Waddell.

Excellent use of sparse instrumentation-Nice tones on the elec. guitar, acoustic too...Singing fantastic-you have good control of your voice-getting that grit but it doesnt sound you're singing that loud. I thought the tune meandered a bit in the change-or the melody seems to get a bit lost or something-maybe some kind of instrument hook in there might bring it all together a bit more---who knows-just an opinion of course...All in all your usual well recorded well performed song.

dang...!! I dig your harmonica playing...

This sounds sweet man. This is prolly the clearest "naked" mix I've heard so far. The mix sounds very even and in-your-face.

And yes... electric guitar effects are allowed....

but if you compressed that vocal, then I'll have to kick your @ss.

Chris:

This is gonna' get a few spins so I can comment on the tune properly, but in the interim, the recording absolutely kicks ass. I have no idea what effects you're thinking about adding to this, but the ONLY thing it might "need" would be some verb on the harp.

Seriously, this totally works all clean like this...Jesus, nice work man.

2:12 -...that first part of the verse..."but the man/men that I found"...that whole 1/4 verse seems oddly behind the beat. Lol...splice it and move it left a tad (yes, cheat).

Really, I'm just posting back to tell you that this totally kicks ass on many many levels...I don't know what you do for a living, but you have a bona fide fan here in Texas...there's no pretense at all in this, and it just kicks ass.

You're smart, too...lol...I can tell. :D

[edit] I'll read the other comments now, but while I'm thinking about it...how'd you record the guitar? I'm hearing tele? Through a Fender amp? So if it's a Fender squire through a gorilla practice amp, lemme' know, lol.

fprod: That's way cool you noticed that thing about the guitar sound when it's struck harder. I noticed it too after I recorded it and I thought it sounded kinda cool too. And thanks for the Rube Waddell reminder. I'm gonna check them out today.

Strat: I hear you about the "meandering". This tune has gone through many incarnations - it used to be a pop song (with a disgusting catchy hook) if you can imagine that. But when I settled on the current version I left out everything but the story - since it's already WAAAY too freakin' long!

WATYF: Thanks much, man. No compression, although I did so much manual gain riding on this one that I really should have just cheated and used compression and saved 4 or 5 hours.

chris: damn, it's pretty cool to hear that "bona fide fan" thing coming back at me from a guy whose entire damn Nowhereradio catalog is on my hard drive.:) But the remark that made my day was the guitar comment. A tele? Through a fender? (pause, while I laugh hysterically).

Actually, the guitar is a piece of shit strat knock-off that doesn't even have a brand. Just s small sticker that says "made in China". I kid you not. Got it in a pawn shop in Oakland 5 years ago for $25.

I ran my beloved piece of shit through the amp modeling in my Boss BR532 (with which I do all my tracking). My initial impression of COSM modeling was to consider returning the thing to the store. But after extensive fiddling I can coax some decent sounds out of the thing.

Oh, and I'm unemployed.:)

thanks for the comments guys,
Chris
