Well, I do have this thing I'm working on this month; I was hesitant to post because it's not done yet, it just has it's rhythm section and horn parts tracked, it is without melody and solos right now, I'm waiting for my booking with the sax player. It also lacks a title so far.

What you hear is a Boss DR-660 drum computer with it's own native reverb (allowed in this exercise), a Carlo Robelli fretless bass plugged directly into the D1600, no effects or EQ whatsoever, a Roland RD-500 triggering an E-Mu Proteus 200 Rhodes sound, totally dry save for the native patch parameters, a Korg Triton horn section, dry, and a Fender Strat through a Zoom guitar pedal. The mix is rough, the track is unmastered, and no post production has been applied, save for normalization for volume and enveloping the beginning and ending for time's sake.

I'll probably end up retracking the Rhodes and horns, I'm not happy with em.

Edifying?

This will be on my 2nd jazz CD, coming sometime in 2004, after my Ambient CD Heaven is released this Christmas.

Cheers,
Phil "Llarion: The Jazzinator" Traynor

Sounds like something off of one of my many Rippingtons CD's.I dig this style of music. You've got some good tracks and a good mox going here....Im with flat-9...get some lead insrtuments in here with a killer melody and you'll have a pretty good tune.

Enjoyed it!

Well, the thing is, I always print my effects duting acquisition; I don't go back an muck about adding them at the track level after the fact, so, yeah, mine will sound closer to finished than the majority, who add them later...

Thanks guys!:D

(Sarcastic)"...yea,sounds real raw..." ;)

LOL!This sounds mint.Great Bass sound! Not crazy about the horn sound.Too much verb on the drums for me,but everything sounds great.Could use some vox to make it sound less like Weather Channel theme music. Can't wait to hear the mastered version,it will no doubt sound huge.

W.I.S.C.,

Thanks! I'm not super crazy about those horns either, I've been thinking of re-tracking them. When it has a MELODY (harumph, always my slow point), it'll fatten up and hide some of that drum 'verb... the melody will eithe rbe classical guitar or sax, but the solos will be sax, and a nice, smooth-yet-screech L.A. sound distortion guitar in that short middle section... :)

I dug this.

Don't take this wrong, it's not a slam (and I'm saying this 'cos it might sound like one), but it really reminded me of what happens when you hit the demo button on a really good synth...;)

Anyhow, I'll echo some of the points the other guys made - excellent bass sound (and playing), and the thing's so wet that it doesn't seem to have much to do with the challenge.

I thought the drums were really strong, and I liked the synth horns (as synth horns - if you're going for authentic, then you'll want to keep searching).

Even though there were some serious dynamics happening with the drums, I still got the feeling the song was all at the same level. I'm not sure why that is, but it might have something to do with that strong bass sound - maybe not enough space in the bassline? Or 'cos the textures were real thick all the way through - even though the color kept shifting, it was always thick (think Gino Vanelli).

Back to the demo thing - maybe it's cos you used cowbell AND clave AND rimxhot AND vibraslap... all it was missing was the helicopter and the gunshot!:D

As usual, I'm not dwelling enough on the positive - my bad. This is very good, and I'd love to hear you jazzinate it with a melody and a lead line. Dry.

Good work, man.

Thanks man! That bass is a $160 Sam Ash house brand (Carlo Robelli) fretless. My D1600 records basses so well direct, I tend to just straight plug them and leave them be. I work hard on my drum programs, because as a drummer, it's beneath my dignity to make one that doesn't sound human. :)

I have a helicopter and gunshot patch on my Triton, should I add it? :)

As to the level being all the same, that's sort of by design (I like you Gino Vanelli reference...) :)

Kramer,
I miss the Weather Channel glory days, when they played a lot of Jeff Lorber Fusion, the Wizard Island CD... :)

Nice work!

Ditto the Weather Channel vibe. Smooth & easy.

Naturally it gets a bit repetitive without the topping, but I listened to the whole thing.;)

Me too.;)The weather channel turned me onto smooth jazz... I've bought a ton of smooth jazz CD's since the 80's when it was played day and night on the weather channel.I mentioned the Rippingtons because I actually like them a lot....I have 12 or 13 rippingtons and or russ freeman CD's.
