Hi, I have an Alesis sr-16 that I'm not too fond of...I like my drums sounds to be cheap and dirty...i usually just use the drum sounds on an old casio or yamaha keyboard played through a processor or pedal.

The problem i have with the sr-16 is that the sounds are too "produced" for my taste. There's someone in my area selling an hr-16 on craigslist for $45 and the demo videos I've seen looks like the hr-16 sounds a little "cheaper" and more vintage. Plus it seems a little simpler and easier to use. My friend, however, is trying to convince me that since the sr-16 is basically an upgrade of the hr-16 that there is nothing i can do with the hr-16 that I can't do with the sr-16. Any thoughts?

I agree..It's just a "upgraded" version..Basically the same except a few features and upped bit rate..As with the SR-18..If you can program one, they will do what you need..If you need " low-fi" the HR-16 will probably be the one to get as the SR-16 is a bit more "polished" sounding..Good luck..
