What programs (sonar, homestudio, protools le, cubase) would be most successful on such a system??????????

thanks for the help

System just a bit on the slow side...
Put in 512 of ram
ASUS makes good boards
Chipset should be fine
Depending on HD space available....limitations on storage
Sonar would be a good choice among your choices

I have a 500mhz HP Pavillion....I added a 256mb stick of ram and a 7200rpm hard drive and was good to go.....it ran fine before those upgrades but they were just so cheap......

the only place where you will be limited (as i am) are plugins (effects,instruments,softsynths)......any multitrack software will work just as good as any so dont worry about that.....

ok

Stupid question:

What is the process to upping my ram to 512mb? What hardware do I need? And how expensive is it?

Ram comes in sticks of different values and speed.
You should have 2-3 open slots to add ram. Just be sure to get the right type for your system. Very easy to install yourself. Just snaps in the slot.

Memory
Component Attributes
RAM (standard) #128 MB PC100
Maximum #512 MB (2 x 256 MB DIMM) < get two of these.
Speed #100 MHz synchronous
Sockets #Two 168 pins DIMMs
Size #16, 32, 64, and 128 MB DIMMs
Free DIMM Sockets #One
Pairs Required #No
Type Supported #SDRAM, 100 MHz, Intel PC SDRAM unbuffered DIMM specification, revision 1.0 compliant

You could even print this out, and bring it to compusa, they should be able to hook you up with exactly what you need, they might even be able to install it for you while you wait, (for a fee of course)

Any board that supports no more than 256 MB memory in each slot probably needs low density memory. This might cause some confusion and a return or 2 when you try to upgrade. You might not even be able to get 256 MB low density modules unless you look around carefully on the net. Figure $60-75 per 256 MB module of double sided 16 chip low density memory.
