Hm? I suspect you do mean an AMD Athlon and not a Pentium III, right? If so, looks good.
alimagik chip or asus chip
Well, they produce the motherboards but not the chipsets, but I know what you mean here too. :) Can't comment on that though, not enough knowledge on my part.

Be warned though, not all hardware and software is compatible with Win2000. My soundcard (Hoontech Soundtrack Audio DSP24 Value (whew!)) apparently isn't (can't install my drivers no matter how I do). Win98SE is compatible with everything, and will be steady enough a platform if you keep it clean from other programs (No games! No games! etc.).
Which ones? :D
sm58/57 mikes
One of them is enough - they have the same sound. SM57 is preferred for instrument/speaker micing, SM58 for vocals but really, you can do it the other way around as well.

Main what?

Well, I don't know... :D

You can't use the Digi001 with W2k. :(
1. What PC is recommended for use with my Windows Digi 001 system?

Before putting together your Windows Digi 001 system, it is critical that you review the Digi 001 for Windows compatibility documents that are posted in the Compatibility section of the Digidesign Website. A Digi 001 system installed in an incompatible or untested PC may experience operational difficulties that cannot be remedied. Due to the large variety of PC's on the market, we've created a special section of the Digidesign Users Conference entitled "Windows User Configurations." This forum is dedicated to providing helpful information about PC configurations that are performing well in the studio's of Pro-Tools LE users.

Disclaimer: Digidesign cannot verify that the information in this forum will provide full functionality or performance. Please refer to the Compatibility Documents for Digidesign's official system requirements.
The compatibility link is: http://www.digidesign.com/compato/

This link http://www.digidesign.com/compato/win98seMeLE.html makes it clear that W2k is a no-no for ProTools LE:
Pro Tools LE can NOT be installed on systems running Windows 2000, NT, 95, or 3.1.
It looks like you still have a little more research to do or you can go with the Aardvark/Cakewalk combo. Lots of people seem to be happy with Sonar on W2k, possibly because it was designed with that OS in mind. You might want to check out the Aarvark and Cakewalk details to make sure that they are both OK with the Athalon processor.

cheeers i think?

SPECIFIKS......

Athlon-1400, 512MB of SD-RAM, 60gb HD, 19"MONITOR, WIN2000
AliMagik 1 chip set, Leadtek GeForce3 graphics card with DVI, DVD-ROM drive, CD-RW drive, 56Kbit/s modem, optical mouse.

1free external 5.25-inch bay, 1free external3.5, 3free PCI slots, 2USB ports.

There it is........this is the computer I am just about to commit my hard earned dosh towards???

I don't think I can re-read everything I have done so far as it looks like one must take the plunge then swim for help???

I have Wavelab and will be getting fruityloops perhaps this will be enough to start with.......Its the break-out boxes and their bundled software which puts the compatibility questions up??

I don't want to ship a product to New Zealand and find it won't work cos of the "chip" of the computer??

whew that was a mission.........licky

From what I read, money doesn't seem to be an object for you.

If that's the case, you may want to consider getting one 40G and one 20G hard drive, dedicating the 40G HD for audio files only. I have learnt recently here that, when plugged in different IDE channels, it improves your set-up a lot (I think avoiding skipping when recording during playback).

Also, check into a video card that allows dual screens. There not so much more expensive. Matrox make good ones.

Oh! and maybe get a full tower with 300W power supply.

Good luck!

The Aardvark stuff is great, I love my Lx6, but they've been slow getting the win2k and wdm drivers.

They came out with beta 2000 drivers last week. These are fairly buggy still. Wdm is about a month away.

If all the beta bugs get worked out, then the q-10 would be an excellent choice.

I think that's kind of it -- you can't shop forever. I just like to do a little extra research when I think I've made my "final answer" to make sure I didn't overlook anything. It doesn't take that much time when you're only looking at one thing instead of evaluating 10, and it eliminates a lot of those "now what do I do?" situations. Sometimes when I'm in a new area I'll buy something low-end (cheap) just to learn more about what I'm going to really want or need, and then but the real product.

Its the break-out boxes and their bundled software which puts the compatibility questions up??
That's where the problems lie. I haven't personally experienced it but there are a lot of messages on this board concerning Athlon chips and things not working. Generally things work out OK. But why repeat somebody else's frustrations if you don't need to?

cheeers i think?
:D Yep, cheers!
