I tried to recreate a classic CSN song. I sang in the choir for a long time, which helps :-)

It's at the top, called 49.

I thought the singing was real good. I liked the harmonies. I've never heard the original song, but the vocals sound very CSN-y. I also liked the bass playing.

The mix has a general cloudiness to it. Like not enough "stuff" above 5K or so. There also seems to be a frequency buildup over maybe 300hz to 600hz.

The snare is kind of far back in the mix. It's a little dull sounding as well.

Thanks Mmm (sounds like making a yummy sound :-)

I'm kind of a tard at the mixing... I actually just posted the 2nd remix based on some feedback I received.

Just put up remix 3 of this pig... Mostly the drums were upsetting people? So I made lots of changes to the processing, also added a room verb to which I sent drums, organ and guitars in varying amounts, a shelving high on the mains, changes in the pressure on the mains, lots of tweaks... But that's what it takes to get something as you as you can make it. Thanks for checking it out.

It's OK, I know it kicks ass now :-) And living well? It's the best revenge...

Nice work Robby, I enjoyed the song. I would have brought the vocals up a little in the mix. To me it sounds like the accompaniment is competing with the vocals rather than supporting them. I have been guilty of having the vocals up too high but I think I would bring these up a touch and make the vocals the focal point of the song.

same here but good work mate i liked it.
might be my monitoring system or my ears too so ignore it if you choose

Thanks guys, I did a 5th remix, but unfortunately "I'm not that guy..." I may phone a friend :-) Stay tuned. It may take a few days, but I know some fellows who are "that guy..." I'm that guy with a mic, and on a few instruments, but the whole black art of mixing is still a mystery to me :-(

There are some people who can do everything but typically you leave the music-making to the musicians and the recording to the engineers. Do what you do well and leave the rest to someone else. That's how teams are built. You did great

I understand 100% :-)

I have a friend who's "really good at the mixing" working on this. I'll post his re-mix when he's done. If you have a studio? And all of the tools... You have to try? It's the only way to get better. I may never be "that guy?" But I want to be as good at it as I can be ;-) Winston Churchill said, "never give up, never give in." So while there's something you can't do well right now? Maybe you'll never be good at it, but if you don't try? You will definately never be good at it... The operative quote is "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take." ;-)

That is for sure, but you are preaching to the converted. The intention of my comment was that if you are good at music and that is what you love, keep your attention on that and leave the recording to someone whose attention is dedicated to the art. There is too much to do for you to do everything. If your band has a manager (and don't tell me it's you cos then I will know you are overloading yourself) then they would manage the recording side as well while leaving you to make the music.

Having said that, if you are really interested in recording, mixing and mastering, then welcome to the club. It is an exciting field of interest. But be warned that it really is a murky swamp. You don't know how deep it is until you get into it and it just keeps getting deeper every way you turn. The trouble is, you never want to get out....

Recording, Rockin Robby - 13 years old

Yeah, I'm an IP engineer on the Internet by vocation, my music is really just a hobby? But it's my passion :-) I am destined to do it all, all of the instruments, I write, sing, and I am forced to record it and mix it so I'm trying to get better at it (as we all are) It's only music? A, B, C, D, E, F, G, there is no H? how hard could it be? ;-)
