Hi. I'm very interested in recording my own music at home. Although it sounds like a great idea, I'm afraid that I have no idea on how to do this. Could someone please help me out. I'm basically a recording illiterate. What sort of equipment do I need to buy and what are the best buys out there to get my good deals? Is there just something where I can play the music, then record it straight onto a CD, without doing all the mixing and fixing the music. I would love to do all that, but right now I want to do the basics. If someone could please help me I'd greatly appreciate it! If you need to, you can contact me at BrookeLynn86@hotmail.com. Thank you very much!

Brooke - If you want to save a whole lot of time and trouble, I'd get a book on home recording. You could spend ages searching for information on this.

That being said, once you have specifics in mind ("which" soundcard or microphone would be good for...???), forums like this can be lifesavers to be sure.

The easy answer is "a mic, a mixer, a soundcard, some software" but it gets so much deeper than that.

HOWEVER, if you want to try some specifics, let us know what you currently have - Mostly, your machine. Operating system, soundcard if known, etc. There are several members here that have a wealth of experience in buiding "budget-minded" machines that work quite well.

Yo Brooke: [your first name couldn't be "Bubbling" could it?:p

[I couldn't resist.]

Good advice from MM for sure. But, don't forget to check out the possibilities of using a SIAB. [Studio in a Box.] Also called DAW's or Digital Audio Workstations.

They vary in price and even the lower priced boxes do a nice job. AND, a simple 8 track box would be a good learning device.

Best bet is to try and visit a major vendor who has these items on hand, like Sweetwater in Indiana maybe a vendor closer to you. The money spent for the trip would be well worth it.

While there, you can check out the PC possibilities too, as per MM.

You'll have a great time making music whatever your level of skill.
