Okay, here's my deal: I have about $400 to spend on recording gear for my computer. In your opinions, what would you say is the best way to spend the money:

(1) Audiophile 2496 + good mixer
(2) Delta 44 card + a cheap mixer
(3) Delta 66 card + cheaper mixer
(4) Omnistudio (with Delta 66)
(5) Other?

Thanks!

What is your ultimate goal with this setup? How many tracks at once do you need? Do you want to use external effects during mixdown?

sorry, forgot to mention: my goal is to make simple, but quality recordings of 1 or 2 guitars and 2 vocals (3-4 tracks at once). Thanks.

It appears that you will be using some multitracking recording software. If that is the case, then you can mix right there on your computer.
Therefore you can skip hardware mixer and get the best souncard with proper inputs your money can buy.
From your list it is Delta 66/Omni.

I'm thinking of getting Cakewalk. If there are easier programs to use, I'm all ears. Thanks again.

I say get an Aardvark 24/96. The advantage I see is the same number of tracks, plus you get PRE's. I have a q10 and I can tell you these pres are clean and detailed with lots of gain. The 24/96 uses the same pres. From my experience they have had very low noise as well.

You'll also get Spdif, midi, and phantom power with it. I think that is really a better deal than a delta66 and cheap mixer. These pre's are going to be better than what is on a cheap mixer!

Give it a look or save a little longer and get a Q10.

Just a thought: soundcards may come bundled with software. You might wanna check that before choosing the card.
I remember that when I bought Audiophile several years ago it came together with Cubasis. I never used it, but it was not bad for the start.
