Hi all,

How would you mic a steel guitar, what mic, and why?
Thanks.

Jerry,

Are you talking about a steel guitar, or a dobro?

For steel, I'll either take the player's effects out (they usually have their own rack of stuff) into a SansAmp set for a Fender Twin sound with a little treble boost added. I also add a Lexicon PCM-41 set for a short slapback delay. If the steel player has a Peavey 400 or a Twin with JBLs, standard guitar amp micing practice, although I might drag out a Sony LD mic.

If it's dobro, a good small condensor, or smooth large condensor, slightly above and in front of the dobro.

Cool.

No I meant Steel guitar.

Never worked with a dobro. Is that similar to
a steel guitar.

Also thanks for the reply. You must work in a studio.

The dobro is an acoustic version of a steel guitar played with a bar in a similar style, but without the pedals.

Yes, I work in a studio.

Most steel guitar players can tell you what works best for their sound. If they have a rack of effects, just come out of that, or mic their amp up close with a Shure SM-57 or a good quality condensor mic. Don't use the board eq. "Clean" is what you're going for.
