How to uninstall ancient Multimix 12 firewire driver? (Mac)

I hung around here back in the late '90s when the Tascam 488 was all the rage, but haven't visited in years. So I'm a noob again!

After several unsuccessful attempts to install current MultiMix12 firewire driver/firmware on my iMac (10.6.8), in desperation I tried installing the driver from the CD that came with the unit (1.1d9.pkg). It installed, but my Prefs inform me it won't run on an Intel machine — but there's no uninstaller on the CD, and the uninstaller for the current driver won't get rid of it.

I found an Alesis doc online recommending DesInstaller for problems like this and downloaded it, but it won't work on this system (it was v.3 beta dating back to 2006). ... The old driver shows up in my prefs' "Other" pane, but not in the "Sound" pane, nor in Audio MIDI setup. How can I get rid of it so I can start from scratch with installing the current driver?

PROBLEM SOLVED — I rooted through the Libraries until I found the offending files and trashed them.

You may have deleted the system preferences pane but not the actual driver.

Go to system profiler and click extensions down the left hand side. This will show you all currently loaded drivers.

To remove any given driver, you'll find them in system/library/extensions

BE CAREFUL. Only remove a driver if you're 100% certain of what it is.

Thanks, Pete — that's a great tip about the Extensions in the System Profiler — quite handy! Oddly, though, nothing related to Alesis or Multimix appears in the Profiler window, but I searched system/library/extensions and found "MultimixDriver.kext" there, creation date 8/11/05. I'm sure that's gumming up the works, so I yanked it out. What puzzles me is that it was sitting there but obviously not loaded since it didn't show up in Profiler.

In fact, I went through all the libraries and killed out anything that said Alesis or Multimix (about a half-dozen files). Thinking I was good to go, I then tried to load the current driver again and the same thing happened as before I screwed up and installed the old driver: the Alesis control panel installs, but it when I open it, it says "no device connected" ... back to the drawing board. It's driving me crazy.

hmm.
There may also be preference files somewhere.

Have a look in users/yourmacname/library/preferences and /library/preferences (two difference places)
It'll be something like com.alesis.plist or whatever.

Also, library/preferences/audio contains general audio device preferences. That could be trashed too.

Getting rid of these means the computer wont 'remember' your device.

BTW, I'm paul. :) I'm gonna have to change that signature cos you're not the first. :P

Hi Paul — yeah, the answer is in the libraries. I went through all of 'em and rooted out everything Alesis, then ran the current driver install. It resulted in a partial install — in System Profiler, the .kext driver was showing up in the Extensions window, but the Firewire window didn't recognize the Multimix. No Pref panes, no presence in the Audio window of Audio Midi Setup (though the MIDI one was there). ... Called Alesis tech support and the answer to every question was, "It's a hardware problem." Sheesh. So I'm about to admit defeat on getting this interface going. I'll still use the mixer portion, though.

As for the handle, that dates back some years, and I've been a stranger in these parts for quite a spell ... just tell me what you think should happen.

Cheers!
Woody

Hmmm that's no good.
Do you have another computer to try your hardware with. That would prove if it's faulty or not.

Sorry, I don't know what you mean here. I think we've got crossed wires maybe.

Unfortunately, I don't have another computer to test it on. But I checked in with the guy I got the Multimix12 from four years ago (he'd used it for a coupla years before moving on to a Multimix 16) and he said it's not uncommon for the 1394 component to give up the ghost over time.

Sorry for any confusion on the "handle" bit — when you said ...

hmm.

... I thought maybe you were an admin/moderator or the equivalent and suggesting I change my signature (handle). :D

Haha, no problem at all. I just meant I should change my own signature.
People keep calling me Pete now!

Ah — now I get it! Him Pete, you Paul ... where's Mary? (Sorry, couldn't resist old folkie joke.)

Eugh,
It's better than the two little dickie birds crap we usually get! :p
