how to trigger samples with nanoPad & cubase essential 4

Here's what I have:

Cubase Essential 4
Korg nanoPad



Here's what I want to do:

I want to record some samples. Then, I want to hit one pad and it play & record a sampled kick on track 1. I want to hit another pad and it play & record a sampled snare on track 2. Ect, Ect, Ect.....


I'm still learning about MIDI and I'm not very good with it, yet. Do I need a sampler or is this something that I can do in Cubase?

The way I do this - and I think most other people do, too - is just to record the MIDI input from the instrument (that nanopad, in your case) to a MIDI track, and then worry about splitting up samples after that.

Example: If your nanopad outputs standard general MIDI, then all the MIDI nibbles for your kick drums will be 35 and/or 36 (which I think are B0 and C0...), snares will be 38 and 40, and so on.. There's a chart here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/85/GMStandardDrumMap.gif

One thing that is handy for drums in Cubase if you're going to use different VSTi's or Drumagog or something to trigger the samples is the "Dissolve Part" feature that you can use to break a MIDI sample into multiple samples based on pitch.

Of course, if your computer is fast enough and your virtual instruments / drum samplers are light-weight enough, there's nothing stopping you from routing the MIDI straight into the VST instruments, and routing their output into the input of new audio tracks and recording it all in one shot - the delay between the time you hit a pad on your nanopad and the time that you actually hear that whole chain of events complete will likely make this impossible for all but the most primitive of VST instruments, however.
