Taming the World--for now
I am not certain that the title is phrased correctly but here is what I need to do.

I have a 24 track HD system that I record to. I also have a 16 track reel to reel. All of my outboard gear is hooked to the aux sends off my analog console. In the past I mixed with the board to stereo and sent that to Wavelab to touch it up in the box and master the stereo file to cd. NOW I just bought a protools m powered machine. I would like to continue recording the same way but then send the tracks to protools one or two at a time and work with them once they are in the box. The tracks don't line up and are off kilter by a few ms by the time the song is done. What do I do to sync them/line them up perfectly? I really want to use the features of pt but don't want to give up my outboard gear and recording process. Please help. Thanks in advance, Dave.

can you be more specific about the gear you are using...brands/models

Gear

Typical signal path to record

SM7->UA LA610->Mackie HDR24

Typical Mixdown is:

Mackie HDR24->Older Mackie VLZ Pro console->Aux sends/returns->Console levels->Stereo outs->mbox 2 pro (New gear)->pro tools

Prior to this I used the same mixdown path but went stereo through an Audigy Z into Wavelab 6. I need to be able to do the same thing at a minimum. (Which I can.) I would LIKE to send the individual tracks to protools 8 and further process them there as a multitrack using the equipment I have. (Ideally.) Thanks, Dave.

Possible answers?

Bumpsadaisy. Any ideas guys? Can the tracks be sent to PT one at a time and then sync'd some way there? When I tried that with my old machine in Cubase there was always an issue of timing after the first minute or so even though I would line them up perfectly at the start. Does M powered PT offer a fix for that? I am open to any suggestions that have worked for others in the past. Thanks, Dave.

your HDR24 kicks out MTC via a MIDI connection right?

You should just be able to plug MIDI out into your Mbox...
S/PDIF out (if you got it...otherwise, analog will work)...
press Apple (CTRL on PC) + J in Pro Tools to put Pro Tools online...
arm your tracks in Pro tools...
and then press play on the HDR24. Pro Tools should follow sync. Then press record in PT once you have sync going.

I have 24 analog outs on the HDR24. I will check to see if I can fire out time code through a midi connection. Thanks for the help. I will crawl around behind the rack and see what I can find in the way of a midi port. Thanks again, Dave.
