Hi guys,

been a while since I last posted but here goes.

Is it possible to use MIDI to sync a VS 1680 with Cubase VST 5?? I got the MIDI cables going out my joystick port into the VS 1680 correctly but I am a totally newbie with MIDI so I dont know how to set the computer program and the VS 1680 up.

Basically, I dont know if you have seen these new things that are like input mixers and midi controllers for Cuabse in one. There is a tascam one, the US 428, and a Roland one too. Basically they allow you to use Cubase as if it was a normal 4track/digital recorder.

e.g. if you press play on the unit it then Cuabse plays plays. If you move a fader on the unit the virtual mixer in Cubase reacts accordingly.

This is all done via midi so there seems no reason why I couldn't set my VS up to do the same.

Basically, here is the plan. I am moving into PC recording. It is better for the type of music I am doing. I dont want to sell my VS 1680 if I can help it. I was going to use it as my digital mixer and as a control unit for Cubase (ie it would act the same way as that tascam thing but with the advantage of it's superior AD converters and FX).

Is this possible?

*phew got there in the end...*

Yeah!

The reason I love the Cubase/VS combination is because I can contol Cubase with the VS (mine is the 880). That way, I can just reach out and slap the play/stop/record button or twist the dial to move the song pointer. Yeah! That way I can see the position of the pointer easily on Cubase when I'm cutting/pasting/punching in/auditioning parts at specific locations/etc.

I've never used the faders on the VS to control Cubase.

What I'm trying to say is that it can be done. Unfortunately, I don't have my system in front of me and can't really comment on how. It usually takes me some trial and error setting MTC/MIDIClock on each and other related settings.

an old friend of mine passed this on to me. im passin it on to you.

Cubase as Master Device
There are various methods that can be used to synchronize Cubase with the VS-1680. This example will use MTC with
Cubase controlling the playback of the VS-1680.

Connections:

1.Connect the MIDI OUT port of your MIDI interface to the MIDI IN port of the VS-1680.

Cubase Settings:

1.Click on "Synchronization" in the Options menu (see figure 3).

2.Click on the pop-up menu by MIDI Timecode and click on the Interface that is connected to the VS-1680.
3.Click on the pop-up menu by Frame Rate, and click on "30FPS." Click on "OK."

VS-1680 Settings:

1.Hold SHIFT and press EXT SYNC.
2.CURSOR to Sync Source and use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "EXT."
3.CURSOR to Sync MTC Type and use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "30."
4.Press F6 [Exit], then press F4 [MIDI].
5.CURSOR to Device ID and use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "17."
6.CURSOR to MIDI Thru and use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "Out."
7.Press PLAY/DISPLAY to return to the main screen.

Press PLAY on the VS-1680 (it will start flashing). Start playback in Cubase, the VS-1680 should start playing in sync with
Cubase. If not, check your MIDI connections and driver settings in your computer.

VS-1680 as Master Device
The next example also uses MTC, with the VS-1680 controlling the playback of Cubase.

Connections:

1.Connect the MIDI OUT port of the VS-1680 to the MIDI IN port of your MIDI interface.

Cubase Settings:

1.Click on "Synchronization" in the Options menu.
2.Click on the pop-up menu by From Input and click on the interface that is connected to the VS-1680.
3.Click on the pop-up menu by SMPTE Sync and click on "MTC."
4.Click on the pop-up menu by Frame Rate and click on "30FPS."
5.Click on "OK," then click on the SYNC box in the Transport control bar so that it darkens.

VS-1680 Settings:

1.Hold SHIFT and press EXT SYNC.
2.CURSOR to Sync Source and use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "INT."
3.CURSOR to Sync Gen. and use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "MTC."
4.CURSOR to Sync MTC Type and use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "30."
5.Press F6 [Exit], then press F4 [MIDI].
6.CURSOR to MIDI Thru and use the TIME/VALUE dial to select "Out."
7.Press PLAY/DISPLAY to return to the main screen.

Press PLAY on the VS-1680 and Cubase should start playback in sync with the VS-1680. If it does not, check your MIDI
connections and the driver settings in your computer.

that should solve it.

RE: czar's post

Yeah. That's what I meant to say. ;)

Nice post.
Where's my print button again?...

Cheers! just what I was looking for. This info is actually in the back of one of the MANY VS1680 manuals!! However, the thing is my Cubase wasnt detecting my midi ports which is why it didnt work! (probably cause it was a hacked version I downloaded from the net.... shhhhh! £250 for a piece of software that barely weighs in at under 30meg!! I think not!).

:D

Thanks again guys.

Sync VS 1680 with Cubase

Hi All,
I have a similar problem with sync'n my VS 1680 with Cubase. the VS 1680 is connected to an Edirol external sound device. can anyone help with this? the sync is not responding either as a Master or a Slave. i am connecting the VS MIDI cables to the Edirol sound device, is this the correct way? if so, can anyone tell me the correct configuration? i don't mind having either one as a Master as long as they synchronize. thanks in advance
