When I play back a song at certain points the db meter hits red and I hear distortion. If I lower the volume it wont red line but than I have no volume. Im using cool edit pro2.0 but I also have sound forge if it helps. How do I get a good volume on everything and still have it clean?

If this sounds retarded this is my first time so bear with me.

It sounds like a compressor will help. What kind of preamp are you using?

There should be a level (for recording or playback) where the peaks don't hit overload and you would still have a clean signal.
(Me thinks 'but then I have no volume' might be a bit streched maybe? )
Beyond that, a more consistent technique and or compression is next up...

How are you controlling your monitor volume? The obvious answer here is to turn down the sound on your daw then just turn up your speakers. If your levels are still really low with sudden peaks then you have to learn about how to use compression and EQ to help control your levels.

What does compression do? Im at work right now so im not sure if cool edit even has that as an effect.

Like I said this is all a first for me so when you say controlling the volumes im kinda lost. Do you mean just messing with the faders in the recording program or the volume control panel for the sound card.

When you combine audio tracks that are close to 0 on a software mixer then they will clip (distort) at the final output. That is when you need to turn down the individual track volumes. Keep the volume on the control panel as high as possible.

Do your speakers have volume controls on them?

Do a search on COMPRESSION or COMPRESSORS and you will find a lot of good stuff.

Is this after every thing is mixed, and it sound like you want it only it has low over all volume?
