How to split audio output from keyboard to two destinations?

What's happening.

I have a Triton keyboard and I'm trying to run the audio output simultaneously to my mixer/recorder, and to my PC for use in Sonar. I've been unable to achieve stereo output to both destinations. Currently I have mono Y-adapters (ending in female 1/4") coming out each side of the Triton's left & right stereo out. I've taken one of the left female jacks and one of the right female jacks and connected them to a paired male 1/4" cable which then terminates to a stereo 1/8" jack going into my PC, and connected the remaining female 1/4" outs to another paired 1/4" male cable which feeds directly into my mixer's inputs. I thought that this setup would enable me to achieve stereo sound to both destinations. Can anyone let me know what I need to be doing?

Many thanks,

why not run your keyboard to the mixer and then run one pair of outputs from the mixer to your pc? i'm thinking aux sends or control room outs, but if you're looking for an 1/8" stereo out to the pc, i'd just use the headphone jack on the mixer. it's probably not ideal, but it would get the job done. i'm sure others would have a better way of doing it.

Thanks for the quick reply drossfile. I had this very thought, and didnt implement this solution for two reasons-

1) I'm not sure how to set up aux sends on my mixer (Yamaha AW16G)! Embarrassing but true. I'll have to look into it further.

2) I don't have monitors connected to my PC so I'd end up having to pipe the audio back into the mixer to hear it. I suppose once I figure out how to do #1, this wouldn't be an issue?

Thanks for your input. Any idea why my current setup isnt working?

well, i'm not familiar with your particular hardware, but i think the signal's getting lost in your various adaptations. i've run into this problem before when making "creative connections." outputs can get a little tricky when you start splitting them, or even trying to use a mono cord on a stereo out (or in).

Why don't you record MIDI to SONAR and avoid the hassle altogether?

Thanks for the reply... my MIDI situation is all good with Sonar. I do use the triton as my keyboard controller when playing VSTi instruments in Sonar. But sometimes I want to use the onboard sounds of the Triton in my tracks, which means I have to get the Triton's audio output into the computer as well...

You can trigger the Triton with your recorded MIDI so the only thing you need to do is monitor it through your mixer while playing.
The Triton's output doesn't need to be recorded until mixdown stage even if you use multiple sounds because it's multitimbral.

What's the actual problem? Are you getting sound, but not stereo, or are you getting no sound somewhere? If you have mono sound, have you panned each mixer input hard to its left or right accordingly? Have you confirmed that signal comes out of each of the Y cables' ends by connecting only one at a time?

I would agree with drossfile, that you should consider running the keyboard into the mixer, the mixer into the computer, and the computer back into the mixer. The trick is using a sub out, aux send, alt 3/4,etc. to feed the computer so that the computer's output going back into the mixer doesn't make a feedback loop. This way, you can record anything you plug into your mixer, not just your keyboard.

I appreciate all the input.

My issue is lack of stereo sound. I'm only getting left channel. When I hard pan the right channel to the right, I get no signal for that channel. I agree, I need to learn how to set up an aux send in my mixer. That should solve my problem. If anyone is familiar with the Yamaha AW16G, I'd be grateful for any advice. In the interim I'm off to Google it up.

Sounds like you might have a bad cable or bad y splitter. Try changing the left splitter for the right and see if the problem follows the splitter.

But really, you should be able to avoid the y splitters entirely.

Run the keys into the mixer and then take multiple outputs from the mixer to your various destinations. It's really easy to do that way.

What mixer are you using?

SonicAlbert, thanks for the input. My mixer/ recorder is the Yamaha AW16G digital recorder.

Well, you're not really using a stand-alone mixer. Another route might just be a stereo/2-channel DI, like the ART DPDB (about $50). You can run the "Link" outputs to your amps and the LoZ outputs to your Yamaha (the LoZ will also have padding available).
