Hi everybody!

I have recently started to do some recording in Cakewalk, but I am not good in Studio issues. First of all I would really appreciate if someone could help me explain how the setup of the instruments should be in cakewalk.
I use drums, bass, 2 guitars, vocal and keyboard.

What I mean is:
What channel should the instruments be on.

For now i use it like this.

Drums in stereo, no panning to the left or right channel.
Vocal in stereo, no panning to the left or right channel.
Bass in stereo, no panning to the left or right channel.
Guitar 1 : Mono panning 75% in the right channel
Guitar 2. Mono panning 75% in the left channel
For the keyboard I dont know

Can someone please help me!

First off, the only instrument you listed that should be recorded in stereo, is the keyboard. And that is only if it has a stereo output. If it is just a MIDI controller, then that is not even an issue. Unless you are recording a stereo source, use a mono track. Even if you are using two mics, each mic should be sent to a mono track.

A bit more info as to your setup, and I can try to help further. :D

Hi Jimmy!

Thanks for you answer I really appreciate it.

Mostly I use vst plug ins and softh synths.

The only live instrument I use is the guitar and I also record vocals.
All this I do through a Focusrite Saffire pro 14 soundcard.

My goal is to get a good setup and mixing of the vst plugins and I want to learn how to
setup everething so that the finished material sounds good :)

I hope you understand what I mean

Oh I know what you mean. Work at getting there every day.

Well then, basic setup should be mono tracks. Usually double tracking vocals. Double, triple, or more with guitars. Depends on the style of music and what type of sound you are looking to get. What type of stuff are you recording?

I record mostly Heavy Metal, music like Skid Row. But how should I setup them in cakewalk. If we take the guitars, My guitar are mono, one is recorded in the left channel, with a pan of 75% and the other guitar is on the right with a pan of 75% to the rigt. How should I setup the other instruments?

We will get along fine then. :D

Pretty much every instrument is a mono source. Record it to a mono track. This does not mean you won't pan the track later. In fact, you definitely will for most.
