How to set up mixing station?

Here is the layout of my basement, where I'll be doing some mixing. The 16'x26' area is basically mine to use. The dashed lines, indicate where I'd like to put walls, but that's just not going to happen anytime soon, I'm afraid. I'm REALLY short on $ for a while.

Currently the mixing area is contiguous and open with the laundry room, except for the one pole in the middle. In a perfect world, there would be a wall seperating the two areas (laundry and music), and I would set up my monitors to shoot the long way (N or S) in the mostly symetrical room.

BUT short of that, what should I do? I've thought about setting up the desk against the pole (the square in the middle of the proposed wall), monitors aiming east. At least that way it would be somewhat symetrical behind me. In front of me would be the big open space of the laundry room though. I don't know if that's a huge prob. So, without building a wall, what's the best option?

It might be worth noting that the S. Wall in the "mixing area" doesn't go all the way to the ceiling. There is about a 1' gap. Behind that wall is the furnace, H2O Heater, and a bunch of storage.

Edit - the other junk in the "mixing area" is just some lower pipes in the ceiling that shouldn't affect my plans.

Nothing? OK, how about this idea - rather than building a real wall, howabout a half ass of a few sheets of plywood (which I already have) along the west side of the "control room" and putting the desk on the N wall. That way, at least, I'd still be firing speakers the long way, and having sort of similar reflections to my L and R. (albeit concrete block on one side and plywood on the other). I will be using 703 panels at 1st reflection points, BTW, and a few bass traps in the corners.

I'd edit my first post, but it won't let me. Anyway, here's what I was getting at with option 1:

OK, here's option 2:
