Hi, Can you tell me what value I need to set in RCompressor When I use it for kick drum. I mean what rules are in the setting gain. Meybe you recomend other compressor for drums ?
The rest of values which I've set:
Attack: 50ms
Release: 50 ms
Threshold: -27
Ratio: 4.1
Gain: ?

Thx very much for help!

Where it sounds good and isn't clipping. The gain knob is just to makeup for the loss in gain when you compress.

Gain is set based on what is being fed anyway. You could have a quiet kick and and turning the gain up 5db isn't going to be enough, or the other way and 5db would be to much.

Yeah, waht Guitargodgt said.

Also, while there are no hard and fast rules for any settings, a 50ms attack is extremely long on a kik drum. The drum might finish decaying before the compressor even kiks in.

Normally the gain control is there so you can make the overall level at the output about the same as at the input, though with altered dynamics. You might look at the peak reduction value shown at the bottom of the reduction meter and use that as your makeup gain setting, but that's just one approach. If I really wanted it to be "correct" I would probably compare the engaged and bypassed levels subjectively and make them sound about the same volume, but usually I just leave the gain at 0dB.

So much for paint by numbers

:)

I'll second option #2 of comparing in and out of bypass as quite often the amont of reduction (or shown on the meter) doesn't jibe with diff in 'loudness.
Similar, maybe related-- also one of the first things I do pulling up a comp' plug is turn off the damn "auto gain" "compensation" - ick :D
