Ok yall, I have a marshall DSL401 all tube amp. I record it using a SM57, to a Presonus BlueTube Pre to a Presonus Bluemax Comp to a Turtle Beach Soundcard. I am just curious, do I need to record with my amp loud? And just back off on my Presonus Preamp? Or the other way around?

You can have a pretty low volume on the amp. But don't expect it to sound good. :) Tube amps simply sound better when played loud. IMO.

Many tube folks feel the sound of the output tubes stressed is the best tube tone.Try turning your master volume all the way up and then set the individual channel level to suit.Even a clean preamp setting will still give you some of the charactoristic compression and sustain that guitarists love. For recording distortion guitars, cranking is still pretty much required to get "that" sound.
