how to record & store grooves made on the roland dr-202 via MIDI?

hello out there,

after reading and researching i´m still not sure how to go MIDI with my roland dr-202 drummachine/groovebox.
if you don´t know this tiny machine, have a look at it:

not really into MIDI yet (it´s hard to understand how it works in the end...)

several problems i´m not able to solve:

1. the user pattern in the dr-202 are almost full, i need to delete some of them but i don´t want to lose them. and i also want to put these pattern or songs back to the dr-202 again, if i need them for performances again...so i think and hope there is some kind of an editor/librarian programm suitable to make back ups and to exchange them?

2. i want to make recordings (vocals, guit -powerpop) and the dr-202 is a big part of this. running through an echo audiofire 4, power mac G4, logic express...
right at the moment i´m using the cinch- line out channnels to feed the dr-202 into the computer via 1/4" jacks. wouldn´t MIDI be the better way? better sounding as well? after a few tries i gave up, cos i´m not really sure how MIDI works finally...

so maybe someone like to help out or give me som useful links.

First, offload the DR-202's memory via System Exclusive using http://www.midiox.com/. System Exclusive is a protocol that lets you store and retrieve data for individual midi instruments. It contains a header that identifies the device the data came from and midi ox will let you store and name files, then retrieve them later so you don't have to overwrite the data.

Midi is how you play back your sounds on the DR-202. It carries no audio but is a control language which tells your DR-202 what note should be played, at what velocity it should be triggered and how long it should be held. You are feeding audio into the DR-202 correctly. Once you have your samples inside the device, midi lets you play them back.

wasn´t able to surf these last days...so my answer is quiet late.
thanks also for midi-ox...but i´m afraid it´s not suitable for the elitist apple-shit
as i wrote, i use a powermac g4, an echo adiofire and logic express, so there must be some equal librarian i guess/hope.

still i not sure how to arrange the midi-information once they are connected to logic. i have completly arranged songs on the dr-202 & i want to avoid putting the single pattern together again.
