How to record live performance?

Hi guys, new to the forum. I just wanted to know what is the best way to record live music performance. The way I want to do it, is if possible have control over each instrument track in Cubase. I have a presonus Firestudio Project Audio Interface, but I dont know how i can set it up properly without dealing with latecy issues or thing of that nature, I just simply don't want to interrupt the live sound, the way the audio engineer set it up, And just use my presonus fire studio to record seperatly. I know i can just record the left channel and right chanel and thats it, but I was wondering how I would get more control. So I can do a good mix of the live performance song to sound good, incase a guitar was to loud, or vocals were loud, etc. I hope I make sense =P But anyways here is my equipment.

Cubase 5
Presonus Firestudio Project
DAW PC Based Computer running Win 7 x64 bit

If the band only has 8 inputs then a simple mic splitter would do the trick and not interfere with the live sound. If they have more than 8 inputs then you'll need to submix things to some degree.

A simpler way to record is to capture the board mix on one pair of channels and record a stereo room mic in two other channels. This works if the mix sounds good in the room. Be sure to place the room mics absolutely center between the speakers.

If you are tracking a live performance you don't have to worry about latency as you will not be recording along to previously recorded tracks, in fact I would wind out the latency so there is no chance of a glitch.

Have a talk to the live sound guy, if the desk has subgroups you may be able to record the sub group outs, i.e Drums left & right, Vocals, bass, guitars, keys, etc etc, so you can balance it up better later.

Yes the band has 8 inputs only. So a Mic Splitter would work? Plug the mic to the console, and the other to my presonus firestudio. And do that for each one? And about that sub group, how can the whole drum set mics record onto 1 track on Cubase.

The console that they use is a behringer pmp3000.

Yes, some boards can submix a group of channels. It's common to submix drums so you can control them all with one or two faders. Usually there is some sort of output for submix groups.

The console that they use is a behringer pmp3000.

That console has no submix groups.
