How to make your guitar sound best?

I connect my guitar to my computer through my M-Audio Fast track USB interface. what are some good effects i can use to make my distorted guitar sound best. there is a background noise when i have distorted guitar on. is that okay? there is none when it is clean

You might want to look into some amp simulators or see if your DAW has a built-in one.

What are you using now? I mean, exactly, what are you using now. Knowing more than 'I plug in to my interface', would be very helpful.

If you're using protools you might have a limited version of eleven or maybe sansamp.

Have look for them in your plugins list. If you have them they'd be a good starting point.

Many amp simulator plugs are available (Line6, Guitar Rig,...) and can be very efficient to enhance the alraedy available plugs in PT. Unfortunately, some freeware and really great sounding plug (LePou) are not available for RTAS format...
