How to fix floppy drive?

Hi folks. The floppy drive on my yamaha psr 540 is messed up. It reads disks that i know have info and it says that they are unformated. I can't save anything on disc and it won't read anything. Anyone here that has had a similar problem that can help me out?

you may need to reload the operating sys for the keyboard.
 
How do you do that? I have no clue how to go about doing that.
 
First thing to try would be to clean it, Radio Shack used to sell a floppy disk that you would squirt a cleaning solution into-it had a felt disc-that would be inserted into the floppy drive and it would clean the sensor on the disk drive. Check on-line to see if its still available, it could be all it needs is a cleaning...
 
I agree. Who knows how many perfectly good floppy drives have been tossed because of dirt. I’ve recovered many with a simple cleaning.

Staples still has floppy drive cleaning disks last time I looked, but in general the item is getting scarce. Radio Shack no longer carries one… not around here anyway.

I recently restored the drive on a 10-year-old Alesis DataDisk with a cleaning floppy and a few blasts of compressed air.

I didn't suggest that, because I didn't think they even sold those kits anymore, anywhere. Funny, I still have my Radio Shack kit, It came with a 5 1/4" floppy too (Glad we never put those in keyboards :eek: ).
 
If all else fails, if you can tear it down far enough, you should be able to clean the heads with pure isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip (or, ideally, a chamois swab).

Well, the EMU Emulator definitely did. The PPG Wave with the WaveTerm used 8" disks, although I'm sure I saw one on e-bay with 5.25"s. May have been a later version of it. I don't know which size the Fairlight used...
