I Have played guitar for many years, and have been focusing on my voice for quite a few months, learning to breathe properly and doing vocal exercises every day. Now I am in a situation where I cannot really figure out application for all these exercises. I just do not really know what my singing voice is. I know how I sound doing classical vocal technical exercises, but I do not play classical music, so I do not understand how to progress or find my voice. I mimic others when I am playing covers, so I have like a Cee lo voice when I play a Cee Lo song, a Greg allman voice when I am doing allmans stuff. I can to many different inflections of my voice. I want to know what MY voice is. Questions I have are:

How does one find their true singing voice?

How does one learn a song vocally?

How can someone work on learning others songs using their 'voice'?

Thanks guys

I think most people start playing music because they're inspired by an artist. So much so, it makes them pick up an instrument and dedicate a lot of time to it. After that, they learn the artist's songs, and try to copy them. Call it inspiration/imitation whatever, but a part of you will always drift back towards what got you started in the first place .Besides, so much has already been done in music, you're bound to sound like someone no matter what you do. I'm not much of a singer, but I can relate to what you're feeling instrument wise. Just go with whatever feels comfortable and sounds good.

You know, it's always a bizarre conundrum, but because I'm classical, I'll tell you that your voice is the voice you use to sing and you feel right about it. Meaning, your classical techniques and support still apply. The style and color you impose on your singing is a matter of choice, not a voice you were born with. Are some better suited for certain roles? Yeah, but any good singer should be able to sing anything.

I'll help you find your voice ..... Have you looked under the couch?

Kidding aside - You hear your voice differently recorded (just your ears) than you do in real time (resonate with your full head) . It takes a little time to get use to it.

I know; the affliction with we who were singers first is that we think we're just perfect, and then we hear ourselves recorded for the first time.

sing your own songs. Keep doing it. Pick out a style you like most and stick with it till you're happy with the sound. Then when you've put in about as much time on your voice as you have your guitar you'll have it!

my two cents.
